Create association

I have Windows Vista Premium installed on a ASUS P5VD2 computer. A problem developed some weeks ago where I could not open links or do downloads such as update Java. I got the message " This file does not have a file associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel".
Another problem was that I could not get the drop down list for options on Internet Explorer 7. I took the computer to a shop and they installed Internet Explorer 8 and that solved the drop down list issue. I thought the File association problem was solved and I did open some links (forgotten which ones).
Yesterday I found I could not open any links. My service provider technical help took over my computer but could not solve the file association problem.
Can anyone suggest why this problem developed and is there a solution. The association message has an address http://emarketer.omnilogic.net/link php?M=1811737&N=383&L=930&F=H whatever that means. Any help would be appreciated. GordonHS
