Vista 64 media player with mp3 visualisation insted of video when running video files

ok.
i use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos.

i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)

i downloaded the K-lite codec package thinking it may be that. nothing happened.
i have also noticed that when i view a movie/video, even though i can close the media player [X], it still playing. i can hear it. when i re-open it, its still playing as if i just minimised it.
so i don't know what to do.
(could my G15 keyboard be keeping the file running in the background somehow)

i am not in favour of a 'roll back' (system restore) because i don't know when it started. (not to mention the loss in data)
and for those who don't know. the vista media player is apart of the program. it can't be uninstalled nor re-installed without re-installing all of vista again.
/cry
not a pleasant thought.

thanks for any help you can give me

Are the DVD on DVD disks or are they files on a hard drive?

Also, do the files play on other media players like VLC or Windows Media Player Classic?

Re: Vista 64 media player with mp3 visualisation insted of video when running video f

Hi there.
thank you for replying.

the videos that dont work are riped off a DVD (useing "DVD Fab") and stored on an external hard drive.
the other videos i have downloaded work fine on the media player, but the ones i have riped, although they did work fine for some time, are the ones that show the mp3 visualisations and play the sound.

i have just updated all my virus and adaware programs and while doing that i installed media player classic. my movies do play on that, even the DVD fab riped ones that haven't been working.
i have also stopped my media player from playing after i close the player (it was my G 15 keyboard keeping the player running).

although its nice i can use this old media player to view my movies now. its still upsetting to have this happen. i like having all the options. and the library and the side pannel with the newer version.
any ideas as how to get the poor thing operating properly again? is there a file on the computer that will re-install windows media player?

It's a driver issue not a codec issue.

What kind of "Display Adapter" (as listed in Device Manager) do you have? Make and model? The first attempt at a fix is to reinstall the driver or install a new driver version for your display.

well. a re-install of the drivers sounds alot simpler :D

in my device manager is shows a Quad SLI NVIDIA 9800GTX+

anyhow. thanks for everything. a driver must have goten corrupted at somepoint. i will look at the manafacurers site for a stand alone update or default driver to install.
