Yet Another Quicktime / Itunes....Windows Installer Package Problem!

After weeks of searching for a relevant answer, I seem to be going round in circles. There do seem to be a number of downloads for this and that, but without direction from someone in the know I'm reluctant to just try anything! There just seems to be so many variables in systems and software that it's a proverbial minefield!
I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could talk me through a viable solution!

The problem originated with ITunes, which was working fine until the recent update(9.0.3). On downloading QTime I now receive the message-"There is a problem with the windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run."

I have checked the events log and see the following two error messages (Some of which seems to be written in Klingon!):

Error 11721:
Product: Apple Software Update -- Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Thanks in advance for any suggestions towards rectifying my problem! :)

Try uninstalling then re-installing itunes, Quicktime 7 will be included in the installation. A friend had the same problem as your having. Apparently when he updated Quicktime there was some sort of conflict.

Hi Gil777t,
Thanks for the reply. I've just tried an uninstall/reinstall of QT & Itunes(and its components). For some reason the Quicktime folder refuses to delete, however the new download has produced the original "there is a problem blah blah", and also this one:Please see attachment.

The events log also shows Msi installer errors:11321, 11721, & 1013. :( !

The window in your post suggests that it as to do with your personal security settings. I would check the settings with my Anti-Virus-Spyware Software, as well as any security settings that are used with your browser. Check for any updates from Adobe also.

I've tried downloading QT & Itunes (together and individually) with UAC both on and off, but no joy. I am the only user, hence I've given myself Admin rights, and I use McAfee which has not come up with any suspicious malware etc.

So although I have Admin rights, I can't even launch the applications as Admin because they refuse to even download! V frustrating!

My own thoughts lie in a Windows Installer issue, and as you say, a possible security setting problem somewhere along the line. It's just how to fix them! :) I sense a can of worms being opened.....

Hi, and good work Gil, it seams to me that every time you try and download iTunes/Quicktime you do it via Apple Software update.
Have you tried doing it directly via the apple website?
You can download iTunes + Quicktime from Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now
You can download just Quicktime from Apple - QuickTime - Download

If Quicktime still refuses to budge go to "C:/Program Files/" and delete the QuickTime folder manually.

I hope this helps

Oli

Edit: Also Gil your link appears to be dead.

Thanks Oli & Gil - Gil, I too am unable to find your link! (Just noticed your update - ta!)

Oli, I've tried downloading from the site as you suggested, downloading QT & ITunes as separate entities - but still encounter the same problems.

When it comes to deleting the QT folder from C:/program files/quicktime, although I have full security permissions as Admin (not special permissions) for this folder, it still insists on refusing me permission to delete it! (Please see attached). Maybe I need to say pretty please! Presumably the number in brackets is the amount of times I've tried downloading it!

Have you right clicked on the QuickTime folder and entered properties, and made sure that the read only box is unticked; and then tried deleting the folder?
If this doesn't work go to 'Computer', right click on 'C:'; go to properties, go to the tab entitled tools, then check the disk for errors.

Hi Oli, just tried unchecking the QT folder as you suggested - thought I was into a winner until the attached message appeared!
I'll try scanning the disk now.....!

I tried "ignoring all" but it's not buying it!

Try doing that file individually.

If that doesn't work, try restarting then doing it.

OK, tried doing the folder individually and restarting, then trying again - no joy!
And as an aside, I've also used CCleaner to uninstall any visible apple/bonjour/quicktime products.

The only folder with anything in it is the aforementioned Quicktime(21), although there is another folder above it named just Quicktime and that is empty.

I'll try cleaning the disk in a bit, then try and digest some of the suggestions from the Apple site as mentioned by Gil.

Have now run a clean up of the disk, nothing untoward apparent.
I started going through the suggestions as per Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows

One of the first suggestions is to run windows installer clean up (is this the similar to CCleaner?). So I thought this might rid the stubborn Quicktime(21) folder and its contents, and thus provide me with a fresh canvas to work from so to speak. However, on trying to download it, this beauty appeared (see attatched).

Could the ultimate problem lie within the Msi script/package? Surprisingly of which I've no knowledge! Another google....!

*Initial viewing for MSI problems shows there are numerous third party downloads for varying issues, which at the risk of causing further problems I'm initially reluctant to try adhoc. I found this site: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367449(VS.85).aspx which appears to explain something about MSI but it's getting out of my depth of knowledge and understanding! If anyone can show the way forward it'd be great*

Hi,

Not a very good idea to just delete Program Files folders. It just leaves a massive mess on the System, in the Windows folder, in the App Data folders, and in the registry. Quicktime has almost 600 registry entries. These will cause problems later, especially if you try to open a file type and the quicktime program is not there etc. etc.

If you really want to remove Quicktime manually, (I think this is a bad plan, far better to fix your install) then here are some of the key files, folders and registry entries you need to delete:

Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool. There seems to be a problem with the Microsoft Website at the moment, so I have attched the file. Remove anything with Quicktime in the name. Be very careful with this tool, it can easily make you clean install!

C:\Program Files\Quicktime\*
C:\Windows\System32\QuickTime.qts
C:\Windows\System32\QuickTimeVR.qtx
C:\Windows\QTFont.for
C:\Windows\QTFont.qfn
C:\Users\All Users\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\QuickTime x.x.x.x\*
C:\Users\{UserName}\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\QuickTime\*
C:\Users\{UserName}\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\QuickTime\*

This will remove most but not all of the files.

I have included a registry file that will remove most but not all of Quicktime's registry keys. I would recommend using a registry cleaner afterwards, but these sometimes do more harm than good.

I will re-read the thread and make suggestions on your original issue now.

Richard

Hi,

This is your best bet. Run that installer again, and for each error, make sure the permissions for that file give Full Control to Everyone. For each problematic file,

  • Navigate to the file and right click on it and select Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.

Hi, Richard thanks for the help here. I didn't realise quicktime had so many registry entries! I'll be sure to refer to this in the future (I can already smell that somethings going to go horribly wrong with my PC soon :s ) and of course if anyone else experiences this kind of problem on the forum.
