registry cleaners - hp or microsoft ?

i see lots of doubts expressed about using register cleaners. on the other hand this site recommends cleaning. in fact:

i believe a computer-generated recommendation on this very site is hawking cleansers to be used before and after installing / uninstalling software / hardware. i don't know what to believe.

does hp / microsoft have a registry cleaner ? they have other tools and recommendations to speed up computers.

I am dead against registry cleaners in Vista and Windows7. If you use one, make at least a backup of your registry before you venture into it. And if you see any performance improvement, let me know.

As far as i know, neither MS or HP have a registry cleaner.

People think that a registry cleaner is a cure all, that will fix all their problems with their PC.
They wont do that, but if used correctly then apps like CCleaner can enhance the performance of you machine and make it a bit more stable.

Most of the problems are caused by the idiots that dont know how use them.

Always backup your registry before doing anything with it.

Also aside from backing up your registry by making a Restore Point, you can use this free software:

ERUNT and NTREGOPT

ERUNT has worked for me in every flavor of Windows since NT 4 Server. In fact I have it run on system start to make a one week revolving backup of my registry.

My 2 cents...CCleaner is the safest way to rid your system of registry mud and unwanted clutter. MilesAhead, I still use your recommendation of ERUNT you gave me a while ago and so far, have not had the need to use it. BUT to anyone out there reading this thread, it will save your bacon if you become stuck in the "frying pan".
