Live TV mode component registration or corrupt files

On Vista Windows Media Center, Live TV had been working since I bought this computer 2 years ago. Now selecting Live TV starts very slowly and produces the error message, "Some of the files needed to play radio or video are missing or corrupt. Windows Media Center component registrtion may have failed." It eventually starts, but changing a channel (clicking ch +) works once. The second click either doesn't work or takes extremely long. Closing also takes extemely long, at least a few minutes after starting. A lot has changed on this computer since I last used Live TV. I have not yet explored what works and what does not work.

Please help with recommendations on troubleshooting. Where do I start?
