The error code text is "the installation source for this product is not available" blah blah. Sounds like a permission problem. Since you have an HP I would suggest this forum:

HP Business Support Center

Even though it says "HP Business Support Center" it's not paid HP support. It's owners of HP business machines offering suggestions, similar to here. A search may pick up the solution.

edit: btw, you can look up standard Windows system error codes, either the ordinary numeric kind like 2 file not found, or HRESULT type that use hex digits like yours, using Windows Error Code Lookup Tool that you can download here:

http://www.favessoft.com/downloads.html

It only does system errors in English. It just uses the FormatMessage API but it can come in handy at times. To look up error codes with hex digits prefix the number with 0x. So in your case you would type or paste in 0x064c to get the error text.

It's a freebie. :) One of these days I have to enhance it to copy the error message text to the clipboard. Maybe this weekend I'll fix it.

It's a Roxio error and seems to have to do with not entirely uninstalling a prior installation before attempting a new one (from what I was able to gather from the very few suggested solutions I was able to find). While the error message may say whatever it says (and the consequences of the incomplete uninstallation may be causing the seemingly unrelated error which may or may not have to do with permissions possibly due to the remnants), I do not think this has to do with Vista (other than the fact that it is "infected' with the prior installation files - in effect, changing permissions isn't going to help and there's no way to know where the permissions need to be changed without more information about the error which we don't have) and I'm almost certain it has nothing at all to do with HP and that HP will not be able and/or willing to help you with this even if Roxio came installed with the system and will refer you either to Roxio or to Microsoft which is where you are already at now.

First, I would try to do a proper uninstall by trying it with Revo http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/revo-uninstaller/revouninstaller.html to do the uninstallation instead of using Vista’s uninstall function. This often works when Vista doesn’t (and even does a better job). Then try the re-installation again but first deactivate your security software and then right click on the installation icon and click run as administrator to see if that helps. If the problem persists (or changes but you still can't re-install), then read on.

I recommend that you contact Roxio for assistance. As I don't know which Roxio product you're talking about, I can only provide the main page link: Roxio Customer Care. To contact support, go to https://selfserve.roxio.com/(S(wtkplkiy22j4al55anrpc455))/Login.aspx (but I could get no further than that as i'm not registered - and if you're not you will need to before they provide contact information - and i have no Roxio products to register with - and I assume they may want the product code or serial number or at least the product name and version or something like that so be prepared).

You can also try the Roxio forums (I didn't know which to check as I didn't know the product), but a general search for the error code yielded the following results: Search Form - Roxio Community but I found nothing particularly useful except some suggestions that the answer was to cleanup the prior installation (though I strongly suggest you do not use the registry cleaning tool as suggested in one of the posts (whereas the roxio removal tool may help) but simply search for and delete Roxio entries if it comes to that - but I would speak with technical support before trying this and if you do try, first create a system restore point AND backup the registry to be on the safe side). I would find the correct forum from the main listing: Roxio Community and post your question there (wherever seems most appropriate AND a forum showing frequent and current activity so it doesn't take forever for a response).

I believe Roxio will be able to assist you as it is clear they've seen this problem before and so they probably have some sort of solution to recommend or help you with directly (which would be even better).

If after posting in their forums, you get nothing helpful AND if after talking to their technical support people, they do not assist you in resolving the problem, then post back here (and this time include the EXACT Roxio products and versions you had or have ever had installed on your system - more than one if applicable - and the EXACT Roxio product and version you are trying to install). I know Vista has had compatibility issues with several Roxio products and don't know if this is one of them. Also, make certain you have the correct version for your version of Vista - there may be differences with 64-bit Vista (and perhaps more compatibility issues). While we'll do out best to help, you really are MUCH more likely to meet with success through Roxio Technical support so if the first person you discuss it with doesn't resolve the problem, as for his/her supervisor until you find someone who actually can help - don't just give up when the first person isn't successful (keep pushing them - SOMEONE there knows about this and knows the answer - I'm almost 100% certain about that).

I hope this helps (and that they are able to help you).

Good luck!

Thanks Lorien for the information and pointing me in the right direction, leftover files was the problem, i went into the roxio support which had clear instructions on how to clean the registry of roxio files, and also sonic files (which are also roxio) which i was overlooking, did a clean install and every thing is fine, And i tipped the scales, Thanks again,patch41

And also a thanks to milesahead, looking through the list of freebies that you published thanks, patch41
(and i tipped the scales)

You're welcome. btw I just uploaded a new version of ErrMsg for future use. Instead of popping up a message box, it uses an edit box so you can select and copy/paste the error text.

It should work on Win2K/XP or later Windows.

edit: btw I got hit with the old redistributable dll snag. If you run the program you may get an error that MSVCR100.dll is missing.

edit2: Just download the latest version. I recompiled it to remove the .dll dependency.
