Windows Media Player No Show?

Ok so I've had this problem before and I've got no idea what's causing it or how to fix it. Windows media player is the only thing I've got installed on my laptop to play music files and such. I usually use it for music and in some cases listening to lectures I've had to record for my classes. Anyway it happens on occasion that when I double click the audio file it will just start playing. I know that sounds like it's supposed to happen but the Media Player window doesn't pop up, it doesn't show up in the taskbar, even in it's minimized form, and when I try opening the task manager to close the program it doesn't show up under the lists for applications or processes. The sound file still runs as if the media player were open though and I can't control it. The only way I've found to fix this is to open the media player from start menu which gets to be annoying when all I wanted to do was listen to the file.

Is this a normal bug or is something I can fix?

I'm using Trend Micro Antivirus and I don't think it's malware. I had to reinstall windows vista a few weeks ago and this problem was occurring before as well. My antivirus program hasn't reported anything unusual and I do have the latest updates installed for it. I'm also current on all the updates for vista.

no, you need to go to "start" > Control panel> administrative tools> event logs...

check there if there is any application errors regarding windows media player, can't really reinstall windows media player as it comes with the windows..

Hmm post the event log, we take it from there

My Computer

Ok, I attached a screen shot of the event viewer console. I'm not sure what in particular to look at. There are no errors listed in the log under media center though.

You need to click on "application" on the left.. this will display a list of events.. scroll through and look for event with errors...
Also check the "system" errors..
We are insterested with anything to do with windows media player here

Hi,

I do not mean to challenge but I do need to clarify.

So, first sorry for asking but are you running Vista? The reason I ask is I remember this issue with XP & have not come across it in Vista!

It never fixed in XP don't know why, I guess we just moved on to Vista.

There's nothing under either of those two listings related to the media player. Most of the items listed under the system errors are related to updates that were either unsuccessful or unnecessary. Those under application were mainly dealing with network connections. I didn't see anything related to or mentioning windows media player.

No problem, I am running vista on my laptop, was running vista on it previously as well. I used XP for awhile on a different computer, but never ran into this problem before. It's only been happening since I started using vista.

My Computer

Hi,

Well it sounds exactly the same as the Windows XP "Bug". I've not come across it in Vista, Have you upgraded to Vista & are you running Media player 11?

I hope so, as that is my version fully updated & working fine!

Looks like it's the same version number you've got, I'm about to the point of just blaming the pc demons. I've heard all the hype about vista being so horrible compared to XP but this is really the only thing that's ever given me any sort of trouble. Guess maybe it's just my luck lol.

My Computer

Ok,

It's getting time for bed here in the UK.

So just to keep you busy? Please ensure your system is "Windows" fully updated & you have the latest Graphic card drivers installed.

Do you have any video codec packages installationed on your system? If so, please ensure these are up to date too. Well the free ones anyway, describe the others if you feel the need!

I will get back to you tomorrow after work (6PM uk time). See you then.

ok... to be honest most of what you just said went over my head. I know how to run the windows update and everything is installed with no new updates available yet. As for the graphic card drivers, I think those are up to date? I also don't have any idea if i have video codec packages installed on here or not...

My Computer

Please post the make & model number for your machine & I will search out the latest drivers for you.

Hi,

There is only one sound driver! So you should have that installed.

Please upload one of your "Troublesome" files as a .zip file (10MB max size) & I'll look into this further.
