Windows Media Player won't play WMV/WMA

Hi folks,

Sorry I honestly don't know where to turn anymore with this.

My Windows Media Player won't play WMA nor WMV files anymore.
It keeps telling me that the codecs aren't installed
WM9 codec
Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
Windows Media Audio 9 Pro

The problem I keep running into everywhere is that under Vista WMP11 is an integral part so there's no way to re-install/fix it. Codec packs like K-Light or Vista Media Pack don't fix this either.

So I'm just generally stuck with trying to find any solution to fix this.
After almost a week of trying to solve this any ideas would realllllyyy be welcome at this point. I'm hoping to avoid re-installing Windows if at all possible.

System info:

Good one, the only thing I'm afraid of is that I think I've had this going on for quite some time without really noticing, so not quite sure how far back I'd have to go.

It would have to go back at least a couple of months.. which wouldn't be pleasant.

If there's a way to fix it I'd persue that before doing random system restores...

Here is an article from e-how.
It is given to you for information.
There is a link to download codecs

I do not know about these downloads. If you decide to take a chance, make a system restore point first. Please be aware that
I do not know what the results will be. It could make things worse. I have not tried them.

That's strange, it says in the ehow that windows media player should be listed in the programms and featues of the controll pannel. Well I don't seem to have this there. Can you verify that this should actually be there ?

My Computer

That would be incorrect information, programs and features is used to uninstall. You cannot uninstall media player

What you can try, if you can find another media player that you like. You can make that the default player by typing default in search.
That would be the closest you can get to uninstall.
Untick WMP.

That works for all video files, but it doesn't work for games which utilize wma wmv files.

I guess it's either re-install windows or go back to an earlier install point..

I originally suggested system restore but then you said that you did not know how far back the problem went.
It would be a shame to go all the way back, lose all the changes that you made and still not be repaired.
How about the suggestion that I made, try another defaualt player. There are others out there?
None that meet your needs?

I generally use VCL to watch video's, but the problem still remains that games which utilize directshow and windows media player simply won't play the video sequences and in worst case scenario won't work at all.

Most likely I'll leave it as it is for a while and then upgrade to windows 7.

It's slowly getting time for that anyhow.

Thanks again for all the help and tips, but I guess this is a problem which simply sucks :)

Hi,

I think the files that are included in game installations are a "shortened" version of the file format (No header, I think) & that is why they don't play in media player!

I have looked into this issue previously on XP & games normally include a "Variant" of the player specific to the game & game video files, hence my "No header included" comment which is needed to "guide" the normal WMV player.

IF there are any "Game programmers here" I would accept the support!

If you need a codec package I would recommend: -
