This sounds very useful for someone who travels a lot (and if I did, I'd probably get it) - but I doubt someone is going to steal if from my home when I'm home most of the time (and extremely well armed - ).

I do wonder, however, if it is possible for someone to reverse this on someone and use another computer to do exactly what it can do to the REAL owner as a prank or a malicious attack. They didn't go into much detail about how they prevent that from occurring (or I didn't see it).

That is really quite awesome! I haven't got a use for it, but I filled up a small section of my HDD with it nevertheless!

Thanks, Richard! I wonder why they didn't just do this as a Microsoft Update. This way it seems like it may be a while before a lot of people realize it (except for those lucky enough to be in VF and subscribe to this thread). It's downloading now - I hope it continues to at least work as well as before and maybe even better - but I guess only time will tell on that.

The beta was grey/gray rather than blue. Is thid id same for you, Lorien?

The upgrade is more grey than blue. I also noticed that Windows Security Center started with an error that said that MSE was out of date AND included an option to activate Windows Defender. I chose to update MSE (first). When that was done, the option to activate Defender was gone. I wonder what would have happened had I chosen to activate Defender first - would they have run together or would the update have deactivated it again or would Defender have disabled MSE (though I doubt that)? I wonder if this is something to be concerned about (in terms of doing things in the right order) or if it's just a glitch? I wonder if I missed out on the opportunity to run both at the same time without conflicts (maybe something new) because of the order I selected? Well, it's done and it seems to be working fine and I'm not going to worry about it and I'm not going to activate Defender just to see what happens.

Again, thanks for the heads up, Richard. BTW, how did you find out about this - is it some site you check every day for things like this or an RSS feed or what? It sounds like it would be a good place to know about.

Wow! It just upgraded the beta! That is so rare it is not funny. How often do you see "Don't uninstall the beta, just download and run the latest installer".

Hmm! Just realised that mine didn't requite a reboot!

Hmmm. I think it has a new definition format, considering it is currently downloading 58.5MB of the stuff, rather than the normal 300KB or so.

Took me just a few minutes to go from Ver 1 to Ver 2. No uninstall and all settings remain the same. I went to control panel (unininstall), right clicked on MSE, just to make sure of the Version.

It also didn't take long for my upgrade either and all the settings transferred - I didn't pay attention to how much data was being moved but it seems like it was more than 300K and it is possible it was 58MB or thereabouts given the timing (not long, but not instantaneous).

I was unable to check the version in Control Panel that way - perhaps that's a feature of W7 and not available in Vista. Right click only offered uninstall (no info about the version). Right or left clicking uninstall launched the uninstall or change program and since I didn't want to do that I cancelled out of it.

I used Belarc Advisor to check the version. Interesting, it calls itself Microsoft Security Client - version 2.0.0657.0 (and is in a folder in Program Files named Microsoft Security Client) though the icon and the program still says Microsoft Security Essentials but nowhere in the program itself can I find a way to verify the version (there's no "About" option that I can find).

It seems to be working just fine - I don't really see much difference.

It took me a bit to eliminate the hundreds of errors I got the first few tries (once I turned them off as they were on by default in Tools/Options), but now that that's done, it's easier to use and quite a bit faster than Vista - though Vista does offer a few more advanced query features (but they're hard to learn and not many use them anyway - I know many, but still rarely use them). It also took me a bit to figure out that to copy the entire search, you need to right click on the bottom file results area and click Copy All Results - not intuitive, but it does work (but to the clipboard as opposed to a search folder like with Vists - and will often be enough).

I still want to compare results to verify accuracy and completeness, but so far it seems like a great little tool that wlll come in quite handy.

EDIT: I've compared results on several searches (for files and for contents) and they matched perfectly.
