Copied MSAccess DB Loses Data

When I copy an Access database to either a new location on the same Vista PC or a folder on another networked PC, the data in the DB is not copied. When I open the copied database all tables are empty. This happens even if I change the extension and copy it. If I try to transfer the file using several different utilities, like LogMeIn or TeamViewer or attach it in an email and send it, the database is empty when opened at the remote location.

I have added the Everyone Group to the Security to the folder the databases are in as well as changed the Owner to the folder to Everyone Group.

What is causing this? I have no problem on XP machines but I do have it also under Windows 7. I have several clients running Vista and Windows 7 and I can not copy or transfer the data so I can fix data entry problem or use their data to trace a problem in another folder.

Thanks for the tip but it deals with a different problem.

My problem is not with copying or moving the database, it is that all the data does not copy or move with it. Somehow Vista is stripping the data from the database when it copies or moves it.

OK,

Sorry that didn't help.

I will do some more digging for information & possible solutions but for now I have nothing else to suggest.

Hi,

A couple of questions regarding the coding of cells & data access etc.

How have you addressed the cells to the data, internal or external to the file?
Are or the external references transferable to the new machine without recoding them etc?

The database is self contained. There is one database containing all the data and all the objects like tables and queries. When I copy this database to any new location either local or remote, all the data is lost. Only the data is lost while every object is copied.

This only happens with Vista and not XP. There is something in the Vista environment that causes this. Maybe a permissions thing or right on the file?

Hi,

Do a "Save as to the new drive location or just try to save it to public etc. on the networked PC.

This will transfer the data & software file in a normal way & that could get around the permissions stuff you suspect is causing the problem.

Worth a try?

This sounds very like the problem I have. Installed Office 2007 after trying out Windows7 and the only Access file (.mdb) I have now is empty on viewing. It states I must open using IE or Access 2003. IE does nothing so have to try to find a copy of Access 2003. In Windows 7 it states that some content has been disabled by a security alert. Allowing the content though still produces nothing.
The only PC I have with XP hasn't got 2003 on it!!!

I've tried that with my similar problem, no joy. Everything looks ok until you open up the file and it is empty even though says has 1MB of data in it.

Hello Darrylemaio,

Could you please post the full system details Windows version, SP etc. especially the Antivirus/ Malware protection software details for the PC's you are trying to copy this Access file to. Also post the system & protection details for the one that the software works on.

Hello bogart,

Could you please create your own thread (Orange button) in this forum: -

Microsoft Office - Vista Forums

This request is to prevent confusion. We could split off into different solutions or diagnostic paths & will make following the instructions & information too complicated. OK?

bogart, I have found your thread, link below: -

Sorry for taking so long (516 days) but the problem still exists and is spreading.

The "loss" of data occurs with Windows 7 Premium Home SP 1 but also happened with Vista. The PC in question right now is using Microsoft Security Essentials but the other PCs used various Virus Protection like AVG and McAfee and some had none.

If I open a blank spreadsheet in Excel 2010 and import the data from the Access DB in question I can see all the data in the table. If I open it using VB6 with DAO and ADO I see 3 records from the previous database table that was overwritten when the new one was copied from the external location.

The data is there. I can see it if I open it in Access on an XP machine before I copy it and I can see it using Excel after I copy it to the Windows 7 PC.

Has anyone seen this problem and have a solution for it?
