I found that I cannot operate outlook 7 with vista so changed to windows mail which is very restrictive. I miss the out of office reply. Does windows mail live have this feature and is it worth changing over?

Hi north,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

In WLMail 2011, you can add a message rule to reply to all messages with a specific message - so you can create your own "out of office" reply if you want (but it has to be done manually - there's no pre-configured option you can select until you create one and then you can elect to apply that rule when the situation occurs).

And WLMail 2011 is much superior to Windows Mail - but IMHO not quite as good as Outlook 2007 which is what I use (though I have both and use Outlook for everything but newsgroups and WLMail 2011 for newsgroups though I go there rarely).

It's free, so why not give it a try and see for yourself? If I were using Windows Mail, I would most certainly switch - but that's just my personal opinion.

Here's a good site for information on WLMail 2011 - and where you can download it: Windows Live Mail 2011.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

On a more subjective level, as a former user of Windows Mail, Windows Live and current user of Live 2011, in my opinion they have gone progressively downhill. There have been many complaints about this in our Sister, Seven Forums. Especially Windows Live 2011, the colors are thought to be unattractive and it seems more difficult to get to the features that are most needed.
May I suggest that you look at alternative Email clients, I know that I am. Im currently looking at the highly rated Thunderbird.

2 opposing opinions then. I am shocked to hear you can use outlook 7 with vista Lorien. The internet is full of complaints how it does not work. It reports sending emails but doesn't. Created havoc for me. I think I will stick with what I know and my regrets at ever buying a machine with Vista as the operating system.

There are so many E mail clients, as my list shows. Try them, you can make a system restore point first, to get rid of the ones that you do not like, without unistall problems. You will find one that is truly to your liking.

I've been using them together for years and had no troubles when I upgraded to 32-bit Vista Business and haven't had a single, solitary problem with Outlook 2007 (and I even use Outlook Connector for multiple accounts) - though I did not like the newsgroup feature which is why I used Windows Mail and now WLMail 2011 for that.

But as Richard said, there are many free e-mail clients out there besides just these three (though Outlook isn't free). Being free, you can try some to see if any suit your fancy. You can even try WLMail 2011 and see if Richard's impression and what seems to be an often reported perception is also true for you as well - like the others, it's free and can be easily uninstalled if you agree with Richard and the others he was speaking about. It seems to come down to trying various options until you find one you like better than Windows Mail and then switching - and only you can decide on the look, setup, features, options, functionality, lack of problems, and such things you want in your e-mail client and which if any you prefer enough over Windows Mail to make the switch.

Good luck!
