Glary Utilities

Does anyone trust cleaning there registry and defragging there registry with Glary Utilities , with its back up of registry feature, reliability and restore point.

Please note defragging the registry is not to be confused with defragging the hard drive and it is generally thought cleaning the registry without derfraging it will have no positive effects in terms of performance! However if one defrags the registry the performance is clearly visible and can shrink a registry from 80 Mega bytes to 998 kilobytes!

P.S. I heard Ccleaner is a preferred method to clean the registry, while Glary Utilities is preferred method to defrag the registry!

300mg, you are very astute, not many realize the damage that a registry cleaner can cause. This is not Windows 98 or even XP, they are not needed and can cause damage. It has been proven that the only maintenance required is given in the link that I presented in my first post. Thanks for the comments.

You did recommend cleaning the registry though with Ccleaner yes or no?

My Computer

I use Ccleaner and there is an option to use the reg cleaner function, I, however chose not to use the Reg Cleaner. That being said, a very highly respected member of the Seven Forum and a Microsoft MVP, says that he has used Ccleaner hundereds of times without a problem. I believe that it does not harm, but I also believe that it does not help. Therefore, I think that you can use Ccleaner, but I beleve that it does not really help and that there is a very small possiblity of problems. After everything is said, the choice is yours, but I suggest that you just follow my mainteance schedule, since I have done that for years and have a computer that runs like a top. I do wish you the very best, whatever your choice.

Hello!

80 Mega bytes to 998 kilobytes!

I just can't believe that, FULL-STOP/PERIOD. Do you have a source for that, as that would certainly make me interested. I just think that there is far too much data in the registry to do that. That is about the size you would get if you compressed that using .zip.

Thanks!

Richard

I use both Glary and ccleaner and have for over 2 years. The only thing I do is uncheck the tracks eraser. I never defrag the registry with anything but the free reg defrag offered in the list of free programs.

I mainly use Glary to delay the startup of some programs

I neither defrag nor clean nor do anything else to the registry in Vista (manually or using programs of any sort) - I allow Vista to do its thing on its own. I do have CCleaner, but have never used the Registry parts of that program. I also used OneCare until recently, but I avoided its registry cleaning features as well. I avoid all other such products. Though I've heard (even in this thread) of others (some quite experienced and respected) using various programs and doing these things and having no problems (and even claiming some benefits), I've seen too many cases where these programs have caused harm that has been difficult to repair (and sometimes even required a clean install to resolve) when doing nothing has worked perfectly well for me and most (and without risk). That said, I do use programs that affect the registry (like Autoruns and WinPatrol - which can prevent or delay program startup among other things) - but many if not most programs to say nothing of just about everything in Control Panel affect the registry. But that is not the same as cleaning or defragging it and that's what I'm talking about here.

Of course, I do occasionally modify the registry, but only for a specific reason, only when I either know what I'm doing or have trusted instructions, and only after first creating a system restore point and backing up the registry both. I have never done so simply with cleanup in mind. And I too have never had any registry problems that weren't caused by modifications from updates or installations or the like (and very rarely those either) - and my system runs just fine (as long as I do the other maintenance procedures mentioned above and elsewhere).

In the end, it's your computer and you need to make your own decision about it based on research, comments from trusted sources, articles from trusted sources, your experiences, and your own opinion and judgement on the matter. If you decide to use these programs, I just hope we don't see you here with a serious registry or system problem as a result (and I don't mean you shouldn't post - you certainly should and we will try to help - I mean I hope nothing happens that you need to post).

Good luck!

A little off topic here but, WinPatrol is good for that too.
