Solved WMP11 stops working when I click options.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and apologize if there is a similar thread, but my problem seems to be different to the others.
Quite simply my WMP works fine, I can listen to music etc but when I want to go to options (tools>options) the player freezes and stops working. I have attached the event log but don't really know what to do with it, as much as I'd like to I'm not that good with advanced computer stuff. Apparently there's a problem with ntdll.dll

I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks =)

Hi and thank you both for your replies.
A system restore would be unpractical because the problem started a few weeks ago and as I don't use the options that often I wouldn't know when it actually started. Plus I have installed a few things since then and updated my drivers so I wouldn't want to uninstall all that.

kesume as this file contains kernel functions I recon it's fairly important so it should disrupt other processes. I checked and Word did stop working for some time yesterday with a ntdll.dll error (see attachment) although I did get another error with a faulty mso.dll. Any idea on what I should do to repair this .dll?

I also have a much bigger problem related to my external hard drive which is described accurately in this thread http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282722-bsod-when-transfering-large-files-external-hd.html (I have the same error message and same external hdd) but it's a different problem as far as I can tell and I'm just mentioning it in case anyone makes a connection to this dll as the solution hasn't worked for me.

Please let me know your suggestions. :D

Hello Wolvo7

Have you tried to do a sfc scan yet, a lot of times it can repair your system if you would like to try. You probable know how but just in case you don't here is what you need to do.

1. Click Start...
2. In the search box type cmd
3. When the popup list comes up RIGHT click on the cmd.exe and then run as administrator...
4. When the command prompt box appears the type the following sfc /scannow, notice there is a space between the sfc ans the forward slash, after the sfc has run a full scan if there are any error's then run it 3 more times as it does fix more each time it is run...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

I hope this helps a little more as I will do some more research about your computer problem. lol

Hi,
I am still collating information, but on the mso.dll particularly. It does seem to be prevalent in Microsoft Office 2007 suite, therefore also concerns Word.
Which one do you have?
Yes files like this are very important & must not be messed with.
One other thought, before we get too deep!
Have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling your WMP.
Have you checked in device manager for any likely updates required? Any yellow triangles need attention?

When you see a yellow caution flag next to anything in your device manager, this typically means that there is a problem.image256.jpg

Issues that are fixed in Word 2007 by the 2007 Microsoft Office suites Service Pack 1

Hey I'm running the sfc right now I ran it not so long ago but we'll see if it brings up anything. I have the full version of vista installed although I didn't get the recovery disks so I burned a disk with an ISO image I found online. Although it will not reinstall vista if needed I can use it to run the repair tools and that got me out of a tight spot a while ago. Hope that helps.

Hey kesume. Yes I do have Office 2007 at the time of the error it would just stop working when I wanted to close the window. But it just lasted about 30min and is now back to normal. Go figure.
I would like to uninstall and reinstall it but how do you uninstall WMP? It's not listed in the Uninstall program window of the control panel and when I go on the microsoft site I can only download wmp11 for xp sp2, which cannot be installed when I run it because it's an older version than the one I have.
There are no caution flags in device manager and I have updated my drivers using a program called SlimDrivers 2 days ago, it found about 12 updates available. However I did a system restore after installing these drivers because one of them didn't install correctly, and when I run SLimDrivers again it doesn't detect them as needing updates so I'm not quite sure if the updates are still installed or if the drivers have been restored but are no longer detected by SLimdrivers. Anyways it does seem as if they're up to date.

Hey americancritic. Would you recommend downloading and replacing the ntdll then?

The sfc scan has finished. Here's what it says:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I tried to open the cbs.log but it says access denied. I have claimed ownership but same result. Can't attach it either although I may have to restart the cpu.

As it's getting late in the UK I'm gonna sign out but please feel free to post any advice and I'll get back to you tomorrow.
Thanks

Good morning ^^. I'll keep you updated as I do what you recommended. Thanks for the tips.
I was able to get the sfc report as you suggested (sfcdetails1 attached), I checked and the problems were mainly due to the fact that I patched the system using a program called Vistaglazz, to allow custom themes on vista. The sfc has reverted the settings back to normal.

Now I feel a bit stupid but I just remembered that I changed the vista language to english (yeah it should be obvious...) using a program called Vistalizator, which allows you to change the language without having to upgrade to vista ultimate as it's not possible to do it on the home edition (the original language is french). I reverted back to french and tadaa the wmp options work. I had a few problems with windows update too as some updates were in french and it was trying to redownload them in english and couldn't install them. I'm sorry the solution was so obvious but you gave me some very helpful tips that I'm gonna bookmark. I'm also gonna run a system health report just for fun :p and the sfc scan 3 times as you suggested.

However please let me know if you see any errors in the sfc log that are not theme related, in particular there is one that was fixed on wmpntw.exe. Also would you know if there is any way to make the wmp options work in english? I guess the best bet would be to reinstall it, but I'd make a backup of the WMP folder and the wmploc.dll first.

Cheers

PS I would upload the new sfc report but when I type the code it just gives me yesterday's not the new one. I have removed the old one from the desktop and renamed it but I still get the same log..

Hi,
Happy you got/getting things sorted.
Sacre bleu! LoL! The small things, like downloading vistaglass as a patch, and the minor item of a language change, may have just been helpful whilst trying to solve your problem. LoL! L'esprit de l'escalier?
Joking apart, any details like that are important to us in putting info together in order to make a suggestion.
As for French version WMP OS, to play in English? L'esprit de l'escalier!
Not had chance to look at the log yet. Let us know your progress.
Bonne chance et etre sain.
(something like that, my French is a bit rusty)
