Solved HP Update Software Utility - Critical

Daisymay

Member
When checking HP Total Care Adviser - PC Health & Security I found I had one critcal message. HP Update Software Utility.

Can someone tell me how to fix it. When I click run, nothing happens. When I try to click close, nothing happens. I tried looking up help and it said to click the green arrow to the right of the description. I did not see any arrow. I had to press control, alt and delete to escape.

Is there a solution?

Hello Daisymay

For this update I always go right to HP, the best way I found is this.

Click Start...
Right click on computer...
Click properties...
Scroll down to where where you see these words, in blue, Online Support, and get you updates from there...

But since you had a problem with that update, lets see if we can fix it first..

Click Start...
In the search box type" cmd...and hit enter...
When the popup list comes up scroll up until you see cmd.exe...
Right click the cmd and run as administrator..
When the command box appears then type: sfc /scannow, notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash...

After the full scan if it shows any errors then run the sfc 3 more times as it fix's more each time it is run. Here is a great tutorial from the forum, this scan is easy to do and don't use your computer until it is finished.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

Also when is the last time you scanned for any virus's or malware...

Do a full scan using your security anti-virus

I would aslo recommend that you download malwarebytes and run a full scan, here is there link download there free version, Malwarebytes lol

Hi,

I think the HP update is for the update software itself.

Please click run & allow it to download & run. It should stop the old version & re-run to confirm the update. It willl take time to complete, about 3 to 30 minutes depending on your connection speed. OK?

Hello

Lottiemansion is 100% correct about the download and or updates, I just like doing it the other way as I can then look over all the other things that I can download, just because it says critical does not mean you have to do it and it does not mean that there is something wrong with your computer. They make things look like that and a lot of people think oh my gosh what do I do type of thing you are OK and these answers will help you just fine....LOL

But because in your first post you had a samll blip per say we want to rule out the possibilitys of you having a virus or malware on you system, so I would do those things we have suggested about the scanning for them.

I tried a system restore. It did not work. It is still there.

When I click start\properties I get "view basic information on your computer" Could not see online support.

I got lost on your other suggestion. When I typed in cmd\enter I got a pop up C:Windows\system32\cmd.exe
In the box it had C:\users\user No sign of cmd.exe I typed in sfc /scannow but it keeps asking for the administrator. I am the administrator.

I am using Windows Vista,

Lottiemansion
At HP's PC Action Centre where it says critical, clicking on the run selected updates button gives a confirmation pop up. When I click yes the screen freezes. When I also tried clicking run on the right hand side nothing happened.

I last did a antivirus scan on the 30th March 2011 which was OK. I will now run another one.

Any suggestions on what I do next?

hello,

you can do one thing just remove it from startup programs.

download CCleaner and install it. while running CCleaner go to "Tools" on the left, and then "Startup" in the middle. Highlight HPWUCII.exe (in the Startup Folder listing),
by left clicking once on it in the StartUp Folder list and click "Delete Entry" lower left. (Now it is gone from your startup folder (so it will not start w/ Windows), though still an installed program and can still be reached via the Program Menu).

Then just reboot your system. and then run it again manually.

share your result. Thanks.

Get rid of HP Total Care Adviser. You do not need it.

For any problems/glitches that may be related to driver or software updating, just go to:
HP® - Laptops, Desktops, Printers, Servers and more

Click Support & Drivers and check Download Drivers and Software(and firmware), type in you HP model and click Go; then select you OS and click Next, then go through the list of drivers/softwares currently available for downloading.

Most of the items listed are already factory installed. Check the dates. Upgrades and updates after the date of purchase are probably what you need...if relevant.

Check if you have the most recent System Bios. Install if you have old version.

Hello Arvinwebb I agree with the CCleaner but they should never use the regisrty cleaner, if they don't know what they are doing they can cause more harm then good.

We can type the sfc one more time, if you have a printer please print everything before you do this as you can then read how to do it.

Click The Start Button...
In the search box type: cmd...and then hit enter...
When you hit enter your start popup list should come up, when it comes up at the top of the list it should say CMD.EXE when you see that then you RIGHT click on the cmd.exe. After you right click it you will get a pop down list, click run as administrator...
Then the command box should appear, when it comes up it will be a black box and there should be a cursor flashing inside the command box, where the cursor is flashing you will type: sfc /scannow....Notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash, when you type this then you hit enter and then leave your computer alone untill it is finished scanning..If it comes back as having any errors then run the sfc 3 more times, if you are able please print this tutorial it will walk you through the whole process..

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

If you can print to where you have this handy you will be able to do this with ease. I know that it can be kind of scary but it is ease and when you do it you will be learning more about your computer, plus we are right here if you need us, there is always someone on the forum to help you. So please just do this at your own speed grab a cup of tea as I do and just follow the instructions from the tutorials and I promise you will do great, we are all rooting for you.

Yes Tom, you are very right that CCleaner can be harmfull especially in regidtry cleaning if one shouldn't know about it. but i was giving advice about how to get rid from startup. didn't want Daisymay to use MSconfig.

But by the way you are right that one should not do registry cleaning with CCleaner without having much knowledge.

Thanks for your support and input.

Hello everyone.

Arvinwebb
I did not run CCleaner. I checked them on the Internet and they did not get a good report. I know very little about computers but I have learnt to be very wary about Registry Cleaners, they can do more harm then good.

I do not know which version I Have. It was in the computer when I bought it. Windows Vista HP6000 Notebook PC

Thanks for the information. I may try it as a last resort.

Hi Tom. Message No.10 As I said before it gives information on the computer but nothing about online support.
Message No.11 I did print your message out and tried again. I got the same thing. A black box with C:\users\user and when I type sfc /scannow it says "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility

It is nice to know there are people who know about computers who are willing to help people like me (I am a Senior Citizen) who are frightened when things go wrong. I appreciate you saying to take this at a slow pace and ask questions. There is always something going wrong with my computer which I do not know how to fix.
Knowing I can turn to the Forums for help is much appreciated.

Hello Dasiymay

CCleaner is a very good product, just don't use ther registry cleaner, CC will clean you computer from internet cookies and other things. I have been using it myself for about 2 years and a lot of other members use it also, it's all good if you do it this way. Please do not do anything you don't want to, you don't have to download it if you do not feel comfortable with it, we will try and work on the other issues you have with your computer...

HP Total Care Adviser is a useless over-sized program that always announces something critical about your system that you must attend to ASAP. Their updates are mostly after market product endorsement.

I had deleted it long time ago. Matter of fact I deleted lots of HP trial bloatwares that came with the PC. Saved lots of space.

Update I put my computer into a shop to correct some problems I was having. Namely "critical, built in microphone on Skype not working and the Chat section in my personalise page not right".

When I got my computer back nothing was fixed.
The microphone was broken so I bought an external one.

The other two problems were fixed when I did a Systems Restore again. On Arvinwebb's suggestion earlier I had tried it. Obviously I had not gone back far enough. My apologies.

Everything is OK now. Thanks to everyone for their help
