i did that, still opens the sfcdetails.txt but it is blank
EDIT: currently running sfc /scannow

Something not right, run it again, make sure to use Command prompt, Start button, all programs, accessories, right click Command prompt , okay it, then type the sfc /scannow and press enter . then see if you have the text file of results .

while the scan is running, i have a separate question.
After I exhausted all options to try to fix the problem and if it doesn't work, I'm thinking about a reformat.
If i purchase windows 7 (currently running vista) and install, will that reformat the computer or do i need to reformat using the vista disc first (which is currently at my other residence)
lastly, im assuming reformatting will fix this problem? im aware it should be used as a last resort

Well, yeah, it would, but, look here : Repair Vista Options - Preferred Sequence We are at step 9, but, I am leaning towards a step 6 .

ok.. for an update the scan is currently at 50%
and for a system restore, this Java problem has gone back at least 6 months maybe more, so im not sure if there is a way to restore to when i first got the laptop or not
and again i appreciate all your help and walking me through this

ugh, at 56% it stopped and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the required operation."
