WMP: how do I import track info for a mix CD?

    Folks,

I'm butting my head against the wall which is WMP.

I've set my house up so I can stream audio from my Vista machine to my audio system. WM CENTER is the default program which my amp and network TV looks for, apparently. That's fine.

The process of loading audio content seems to be that I insert a CD, rip it in WM PLAYER which loads into its library, and then WM CENTER imports the library contents. While it is ripping, I can select "download album info" and that imports all the song names, album title, etc. Once WM CENTER has it, I can set playlists, etc., search based on ratings, name, etc.

The problem I have is importing a custom mix cd. If I insert a custom mix cd, WMP labels everything "Track 1, Track 2," etc. The cd gains the title "Unknown Title", "Unknown Artist", etc.

How do I get WM CENTER to automatically download the track titles and associated information? Individually selecting every track and entering all the information for that track is asinine in this day and age. The information exists. I don't mind pointing (linking?) each track to its associated online information, but I have no clue how, or if, WM CENTER can do that. So far, it seems it can ONLY import information as a whole album.

(In fact, another, associated problem, is that WM CENTER now thinks one of my custom cd's is an album. I cannot get WMC to stop mis-labeling the cd and all the tracks. Grrrr!!!)

How do I import track information, for individual tracks?

How do I dis-associate the wrong album information from a custom cd? (A mix cd.)

    Thank you,

    Ken

I think the custom mixed cd was done without CD Text which would have all the individual titles, etc.

    Okay, the head-butting continues...

Wall (which is WMP) 2: Head (me) 0

I DELETED my ripped mix CD from WMP. I chose to delete from LIBRARY and COMPUTER.

I inserted a newly burned CD, this time ensuring that "CD Text" had been selected.

WMP immediately showed all the tracks as "already ripped". C'mon, guys. Give me a friggin' break. How the heck does DELETE work if it doesn't DELETE the file?

So, CD "A" ripped but shows no track info. These are "ghost" songs that WMP cannot find. WMP only finds songs based on the album. That's so wrong.

All CD "A" files deleted from WMP. (Or so I thought.)

CD "B" = CD "A" + CD Text. Insert CD "B". WMP will not let be rip the songs because it is already ripped. Hence, the CD Text will not get imported. WTF???

In the development and updates to WMP, surely the idea that a user would load music one song at time, rather than a full album at a time, was mentioned? WMP 11 (the version I'm running) surely must have SOME way for to download track information.

    What's the secret?

How do I really delete music? Since, you know, the Library/select the music/select delete doesn't get rid of it.

If I do manage to delete the music, then, maybe, I can find out of "CD Text" will import the track information.

    Ugh.

I assume your optical drive is capable of using CD Text. A great percentage are not. In most burning software, if your drive is not capable of CD Text, it may either not burn the CD, instead burning it to an image file, or burn it without the text.

I can't answer your questions about WMP. I don't use it unless I have to. There's probably some .xml file someplace that tracks what's been done.

Hopefully, someone else will chime in here.

It won't, at least not out of the box. WMP doesn't have built-in support for CD-Text, but you can install the WMPCDText plug-in to enable WMP to read CD-Text from audio CDs.

In WMP, please go to Tools - Options - Privacy (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu), and click Clear Caches. Can you rip the CD again now?
