Java 6 Update 3 -- what is and how remove

QUESTION: My uninstall program list has an entry "Java (TM) 6 Update 3" with size 133 MB. There's nothing under "publisher" and no "program installed date." I want to uninstall it, but when I click on it there's also no "uninstall" button on top, only "organize" and "views." . . . SO: (1) what is it and where did it come from? (2) how do I uninstall it?

BACKGROUND: I ran an Avast boot-time scan which found "Java: Agent-WC." One of the forums said to get rid of it I should uninstall Java and reinstall it (v.6.0 or higher). This is what I was trying to do.

NOTE: I'm an old guy with only a shallow understanding of this stuff, so it would be great if you could keep it as simple as possible consistent with telling me what I should do. Thanks for any help.

It should be easy
Go to control panel, you can type that in search by the start button if you dont know how to find it
In control panel go to programs and features
In programs and features find Java, right click and then uninstall

You can use third party uninstaller programs for better solution. You can download the software from the internet free of cost and try the uninstall process.

You can use third party uninstaller programs for better solution. You can download the software from the internet free of cost and try the uninstall process.
If the Control Panel "Programs and Features" can't see it, neither will a general 3rd party uninstaller. They both look at the same registry information. Ones tailored to specifically target Java may work, though.

It sounds like something got corrupt along the way. You may need to manually remove the Java installation. There are a couple of approaches you can take on this. I'd try them in this order:

  • Run the Windows Install Cleaner, provided by Microsoft.
  • Run JavaRa, a specialized Java installation maintenance tool.
  • Manually edit Registry to remove Java entries
  • Delete Java files directly from:
    -- C:\Program Files (x86)\Java
    -- C:\Users\[your ID]\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java

Also, if your anti-virus is detecting a virus that it can't remove, I'd download Malwarebytes and run it (a thorough tool for targeting pesky infections).

it sounds like somebody deleted files and and in programs and feature the uninstall was removed with the files. if you open computer, see your harddrive right click it and open list of folder comes up right click on program files and it list all programs and somebody must of deleted it there first before deleting from program and feature.
you can redownload java and it should say files already exist do you want to copy over it, click ok. then go in program and feature to uninstall it. if it doesnt, then somebody deleted the files.

I agree with latecomer... If you run Java Update from "Java" in the Control Panel, it should install the latest version and remove the previous version. I believe we're beyond version 7 now... Java is an application similar to Adobe Flash Player which allows you to run certain applications with it. It's not something I'd remove manually unless I had an updated version on my computer..
