Java (for non-programmers) is the run time system needed to support applications written in the Java language. Aside from that it has nothing to offer. It is popular in portable devices and also used in some desktop applications and websites. Although the number of these websites is small it tends to be mission critical when needed. Many banking sites rely on it.

In recent years it has been targeted by hackers and is quite a significant security risk. Install it if you really need it. Otherwise avoid it.

Hi LMiller7,
In recent years it has been targeted by hackers and is quite a significant security risk.

I have installed java on my windows 8 just to play a emulator game however the java program I downloaded is from java official website is a risk still?

Thanks.

NSA actually recommended to not install it unless its really really necessary.

Hi OldMX,
What is the risk I mean what a hacker can do with java that I installed on my pc. The java program I downloaded from java official website.

Thanks.

There are a number of known security holes in java that malicious programs can take advantage of in certain ways. Therefore you must be careful when using java and only use programs or websites that you trust. When you don't need it you should disable it.

It is assumed that you will obtain Java from the official source. If you obtain it elsewhere you multiply the risks.
Java is a complex language and like all non-trivial software, despite the writers best efforts, it will contain bugs. That is the reality with software. The writers of malicious software are often able to take advantage of these bugs to further their own ends. What they can then do is limited primarily by their imagination and abilities, and some are very good indeed.

The issue exists with all programming languages but because of Javas popularity it has attracted the interest of hackers. So once again, use Java if you need it, otherwise avoid it.

I LMiller7,

I do agreed to the point that some of almost software contain bugs however the problem still persist right now? is java team still not be able to fix the flawless bugs?

Thanks everything.

It is not that Java contains a number of bugs that will soon be fixed and the problems will then be solved. If only it were that simple.
It isn't just software bugs that are the problem. Security vulnerabilities are not really bugs, at least not in the normal usage of the word. Java is a complex system and the potential security issues are very large. And there are likely known security issues that will never be fixed because to do so would break critical functionality.

I am not saying that Java itself is particularly vulnerable to attack. It is just that due to the current situation it is a particularly attractive target.

The day may come when Java development largely eliminates the security risks. Maybe, but I doubt it. From what I know of the malicious software industry I expect that the problems will get worse in the future, not better.
