New Version of 7-Zip Released

New Version of 7-Zip Released :
VERSION: 4.58 beta
DATE: 5-05-2008

DOWNLOAD AT: http://www.7-zip.org/
NOTE: Be sure to download the correct 32 bit or 64 bit (x64) version for your version of Vista.

Updates:
History of all Updates:
http://www.7-zip.org/history.txt
  • Some speed optimizations.
  • 7-Zip now can unpack .lzma archives.
  • Unicode (UTF-8) support for filenames in .ZIP archives. Now there are 3 modes:
    1) Default mode: 7-Zip uses UTF-8, if the local code page doesn't contain required symbols.
    2) -mcu switch: 7-Zip uses UTF-8, if there are non-ASCII symbols.
    3) -mcl switch: 7-Zip uses local code page.
  • Now it's possible to store file creation time in 7z and ZIP archives (-mtc switch).
  • 7-Zip now can unpack multivolume RAR archives created with
"old style volume names" scheme and names *.001, *.002, ...
  • Now it's possible to use -mSW- and -mSW+ switches instead of -mSW=off and -mSW=on
  • Some bugs were fixed.
  • New localizations: Punjabi (Indian), Pashto.

Re: New Version of 7-Zip Released

I've never heard of 7-Zip, is there any major difference between it and WinRar?

AMD Athlon 64X2 6000+ @ 3.2GHz \ 4Gb(2 x 2Gb) G.Skill DDR2 6400 \ ASUS CROSSHAIR MB \ 300Gb 7200RPM SATA HD \ MSI 8800 Ultra \ 680W PSU \ Windows Vista x64 SP1

Re: New Version of 7-Zip Released

Hi BigEasy18,

7-Zip is completely free without having to register or fill out anything, and no trial period. I have been using it for a while now without any problems. It is a true 64 bit program.

It's been a while since I used WinRar, so you might give 7-Zip a try to see what you think. It can always be easily uninstalled through Programs & Features.

Re: New Version of 7-Zip Released

I really like it, but only as an alternative to Winrar. I usually have both and then just switch between them, depending on my mood. But 7-zip beat winrar on the Price / Performance level.
