Sound Recording from What you hear?

In XP I could record audio with sound recorder from anything I could hear. For example, if I was playing a WAV file, or listening to a song on the internet, I could record it. Now in Vista it only allows me to record from my microphone. I checked disabled devices and still can not get anything but the microphone to show up.

Is there anyway around this besides sticking an audio cable from the headphone jack into my mic input? So far Vista has me aggravated with things I have lost, you would think a newer operating system would allow you more flexibility, not take it from you.

MS did this intentionally to protect copyright. I think it's a fair move to be honest.

But as usual there are work arounds:

I use a free Audio editor called Audacity. The website help pages has instructions how to set up Audacity to record "what you hear"

Actually I do not think that copyright explanation is entirely accurate.

I found out its the sound card that came with my new HP pavilion laptop. My wifes Vista computer has the "what you hear" option and works quite well, but I found out this sound card does not have the option to record from its own audio! I made a dual boot of XP and Linux and can not get the what you hear option in either of those OS either.

Oh well, sucks to I bought this HP specifically for video and sound editing as it is an entertainment PC, but they shafted me on a crappy sound card.

I bought my system primarily for my video and sound hobby and I was initially dissapointed with this aspect too but with Audacity and some tweaking I managed to record "what I hear". Not that sound off the net is usually the best quality to record I've also come across lots of royalty free websites full of sound beds and FX. One door clsing opens others...;)

Hi Clevo,

Couldn't talk you into listing a couple of the better royalty free sites for sound beds. I'm just starting to learn audio and video. Would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

creativecommons.org is one of them but different parts of the world will have different copyright laws so always check for local sites. and creative commons has links to jurisdictions....this is a good place to start.

Usually googling "Roayalty free" brings good results..it's how I found them. Roayalty free means of corse free to use but delivery can sometimes cost.

I'm thinking of investing in Sonic Fire Pro 4.... not cheap though but very flexible
