Not recognizing headset plugging in

Ok, I am posting from work, but should have enough information for you guys for a start.

I just got a new computer on Friday, and have been having some problems with sound. I have gone to the Asus sight and downloaded the drivers again for the motherboard, and am using onboard sound. I don't recall the exact specifics, but its onboard Realtek.

Sound works fine from my speakers, but I have not been able to get the computer to recognize just a standard headset that I was using with my other computer that same day, so I know the headset is working.

My setup is

Motherboard ( [== New ==] Asus P5N-D Nvidia nForce 750i SLI Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394, Dual PCI-E MB EPU Technology )
Memory ( 4096MB [2048MB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module Corsair-Value or Major Brand )
Video Card ( NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX 512MB w/DVI + TV Out Video )
Video Card Brand ( Major Brand Powered by NVIDIA )
Hard Drive ( 320 GB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 16M Cache] )
2nd Hard Drive ( None )
External Hard Drives [USB 2.0/eSATA] ( None )
CD/DVD Drive ( None )
CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( Sony Dual Format/Double Layer 20X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive Black )
Sound Card ( 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard )

Does anyone have any suggestions that would enable my computer to recognize when the headphones are plugged in so that I may use Ventrilo and listen to music? Thanks.

Verify its in sound settings and device maanger. My Logitech headset had no issues and was recognized on Vista x64 install.

It just shows "device not plugged in".

Under device manager it says "High Definition Audio Device"...

Also, when I log in to vent, it gives me a message that says,

"Unable to activate Directsound for selected device. DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed.

use the USB removal method by the clock. Unplug it. Turn off the computer and restart it. Once its back up, plug it back in and see if it finds it. Check to see if its Vista capable USB device. Some are not.

*what* says device not plugged in? Are you plugging in the earphones in to the out jack, or the *line* out jack? Check your Realtek driver settings (Realtek drivers usually add a tray icon with which you can check the jack configuration, as well as the audio quality, the default devices, etc)....

I also *highly* recommend that you grab the latest drivers (last I looked was R194) from the Realtek Taiwan site. The standard ones that came with my mobo and the ones that Windows Update installed were OK, but not perfect - the R192 was perfect, the R193 botched everything with a *lot* of feedback at relatively low volume settings and the R194 is back to being perfect.
