should I load all my mp3's?

I just bought a Gateway FX with Vista x64 and 640gb hd. Should I load all my mp3's (32gb)direcltly onto the hd, or keep them on an external drive? On my old computer, having all the mp3s seemed to slow it considerably. I would love the convenience of having them local, but don't want to burden the system.

Thanks!
