audio red cross - Conexant HD audio

"no audi device installed, in volume mixer"

hi all,
Im trying to help a friend fix their sound on their HP Compaq Presario F500 (2EA) Laptop. They have the annoying red cross over the audio icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen (No Volume Mixer).

I have tried numerous things like:-

- Completely uninstalled the (Conexant High Definition) drivers in device manager, restarted and let Vista install them again.
- Downloaded latest drivers from RealTek,, and also HP
- Unfortunately their are no system restore points before the problem happened.

I have a sneaking suspision that either Windows Update installed something that is clashing with this problem or I herd that Itunes may have somethign to do with it (Which was installed near the time) .

Please help :-)

compaq laptop Presario f500 - AMD Mobile Sempron
Windows Vista Home 32 bit
1.8Gig
1G ram
6100 Go Geforce (Up to date drivers)

Conexant High Definition Audio seems to be working ok (with the green tick in playback devices) (SPDIF Interface)

Ive searched high and low and tried to install numerours patches etc.. but unsuccessful.

Thanks for any help,
Will

Re: audio red cross - Conexant HD audio

Hi Will,

Welcome to the forum.

Red cross, this happens when no device is selected

Have a look at the attached picture, this is how your device list should look

still no good try disabling all unused devices, by right click

Make sure there is a tick in show disconnected devices

I hope this works

Re: audio red cross - Conexant HD audio

hey Pooch,

I seem to have two available in the playback devices:-
Internal Speaker/Headphonrd (Conexant HD Audio) and
SPDIF Interface (ticked - working) Conexant HD Audio

Both show disabled and disconnected devices are ticked

Will

Right click on Internal Speaker/Headphonrd select enable, Left click on Internal Speaker/Headphonrd and select Set Default (under the device Icons)

Left click on Internal Speaker/Headphonrd and select Configure (to the left of Set Default) follow the simple wizard

Check your sound

Reboot might be necessary

Re: audio red cross - Conexant HD audio

Yeah Im aware it has to be highlighted but it still does not disable.
Even when I go into properties and select disable in the drop down list next to device usage

Thanks for your patience

Re: audio red cross - Conexant HD audio

Ok Will

Go here;
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
A program to uninstall drivers completely
Download, install and run Driversweeper
You will need to select sound drivers and deselect any other drivers

Reboot and install your sound drivers again

Hopefully this time it will work

If not, I am back Tomorrow

I have this probelm too!!

Someone please help me!!

Except when I click on my sound mixer icon, there is no devices to be selected.

It also happened to me after I used windows update. After it restarted the computer.

But like I said, when I click it, there are no devices to choose.
