Clicking noise from speakers

Roving

Every two or three or four seconds I get a clicking sound from my speakers, sort of like would come from a relay. Random spacing, but all of the time. This has not always been the case. I probably turned something 'on' by mistake. Any clues where I might look and turn it 'off'? Vista SP2

One way to narrow it down is to see if it does that in safe mode. reboot in safe mode (F8) and check

In checking around I opened my sound Icon and went to the Volume Mixer. Muting Windows Sounds eliminates it, as does reducing the Windows volume control, of course. Would that indicate that the sounds are from Windows? All other sound levels are as before.

What is around your speakers. You might be getting interference or your speakers are nearly dead.

The speakers are alive and well and play audio perfectly. Location of them hasn't changed nor is anything new around them. Puzzled. Thanks to all for your interest!

Do you have a microphone or something that could possibly pick something up. I think ive had a similar problem but I forgot how I fixed it...

I do have a mic that I use only with Skype and it is off. Scratching on it makes no noise. This other noise sounds like a very small relay. I had a similar on my laptop and found a way to turn it off, as it was a sound generated by Windows. Turning of Windows Sounds eliminates it. I have not been able to find where such can be turned on or off.

Is there an option in the Sound control panel?

Control Panel/Sounds offers: a. Default b. Default Modified c. No sound. To change from those there is a drop down with lots of choices i.e. startup, error, etc. I just select No sounds, and now there are none, and no clicking sound either. Speakers are on and the only sounds I can get now are music or audio, but nothing from Windows related actions.

From this I would have to guess that the clicking is Windows related. Beats me? Thanks for the input.

My setting was Default Modified when I checked it earlier. I found what No Sound meant, so now changed it to just plain Default to see what happens.

Yes, for each of the options, startup etc you can choose what you want. Look for a mic related option.

I checked the sound each one made (Default) and the Start Navigation had a click just as I described. I just changed that to None and will see if that does the trick. I'll report back. Thanks.

Sorry to resurrect such an ancient thread, but I notice that the OP didn't come back to say whether it fixed the problem.

I'm on Windows 7 and have been suffering with this problem for ages. It's infuriating. I've tried different speakers and all sorts, and was considering buying a new sound card in the hope that it would fix the problem.

But as it turned out, it was indeed the Windows default "Start Navigation" sound. Quite why they chose one that sounds so much like a problem I have no idea - but turning that off fixed the problem. (Right-click desktop, Choose "Personalise", Sounds, scroll down Program Events until you find Start Navigation and set that to play nothing).

It's such a relief I thought I'd do a bit of thread necromancy in case it helps anyone else to know this.

I had this problem a while back. dunno if you guys have a dedicated sound card or not, it turned out my sound card was a bit loose and the slot clogged up with dust. some canned air and re-insertion later everything was working well again!
same for the external connection from sound card to speaker cable. check the jack. is there any dust/tarnishing on it? if so, clean the jack and try plugging it in again. some jacks just tarnish on their own (probably too cheap?) and needs a good cleaning from time to time.
