Headphone jack not working, not recognized

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook with Windows Vista, no add-ons. All sound comes from the notebook speakers, and nothing changes when I plug in headphones (I've tried multiple headphones, no dice). When I go to Playback Devices in the Sound Control Panel, the headphones aren't even recognized. Is the jack broken? Is it something I can fix by myself? Thank you in advance.

Go to Sound (right click on the speaker next to the clock) > Recording Button > right click on a blank space in that little window > check "Show disabled devices" > turn the mic on.

i've done this, the microphone has a green check next to it, and says "Working." when i click to show disabled items, another item appears, called Internal AUX Jack, which says "Not plugged in." I've right clicked that item and selected "Enable" and nothing has changed.

under the Playback tab, one item is "Speakers" which has a green check mark and says "Working." The next item is NVIDIA HDMI Output which has a ride arrow next to it and says "Not plugged in."

Plugging and unplugging the headphones doesn't change any of the above. Am I doing something wrong?
