hi.. i have HP Pavilion DV4-1145 that was bought not a year ago but ever since, i keep having this garbled start-up sound. when that vista logo appears, it sounds like a scratched cd. i brought it to the HP service center and they restored it to factory settings. the sound was good for a few hours but after all the updates were installed, the garbling sound came back. i don't seem to have problems with my music or videos or my messengers but the garbling start-up sound really irks me. removed the IDT high definition audio codec, reinstalled it, updated it, rolled it back, etc, nothing really works. called the HP support, emailed them, nothing solved my problem. i tried booting it up in Safe Mode to know what start-up program has a problem but the sound in Safe Mode is muted. i don't know what to do anymore, please help..

Try a power cycle. Take out battery/AC Adaptor and hold down power-button for 90 seconds. Then replace power source and try booting it up again, see if the issue persists.. It is an unusual issue, but I've seen it before. It is NOT caused by a Start-Up programs...

So, you've even done a recovery I see. This is a weird problem.. In this case, are any other of your Windows sounds corrupted? Seems this may just be an issue with the file... Does it happen more on battery or on AC? Or does it not matter?

Try going into F10 BIOS at startup... Reset the BIOS Defaults by using the F9 Key.. F10 Save and exit.. How old is your computer by the way? Model Number/ DV4-1145 TX? BR? GO? Which one you have.. Let me know..

Good luck!

When did this issue begin?

WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS - Microsoft Windows-Based HP Pavilion dv4-1145go Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Download and run this when plugged into the AC Adaptor, and with no other programs running. When finished, your BIOS will be updated to the latest version, and set to defaults.

- And no need to worry, flashing BIOS will not affect your files ^-^
BIOS is basically the firmware for your Notebook. Just do NOT interupt the update.

The one in bold is the issue your experiencing - Your computer freezes up for a split second before booting into Windows, causing the Startup sound to be delayed, and therefore rushed when it is played.
