Hi folks,

Window Vista 32bit

onboard sound card

The PC has sound before. However after several update it has no sound

On Device Manger
Sound, video and game controller ->
Via High Definition Audio

Uninstall it and reintall the driver from the CD coming with the mobo. Problem still remains without sound.

On Device Manger
Sound, video and game controller ->
Via High Definition Audio

Please advise where shall I check and how to fix the problem

Hi,

When you go into device manager, is there a yellow exclamation mark or similar symbol on anything. If there is, right click on it and select Properties. What is the error code that is displayed? Right click on the device again and then select "Update Device Driver" and update from Windows Update and see if that helps.

When you look at the speaker symbol in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, do you see the ordinary speaker, a mute symbol or a red circle with a white cross?

Double click on the speaker symbol in the bottom right hand corner and click Mixer. On the Devices drop down in the top left hand corner of the new box that appears, try all of the options, though the one with the most applications in the Mixer window is almost always correct.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Hi niemiro,

Thanks for your advice.

No big exclamation mark ! there.

Under Sound, video and game control (2 items there)
-> High Definition Audio Device
-> VIA High Definition Audio

After deleting/uninstall them Vista still detecst the same driers automatically (saying the best drivers. Asus CD is on DVD Writer tray)

When you look at the speaker symbol in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, do you see the ordinary speaker, a mute symbol or a red circle with a white cross?

Speaker is there without mute symbol nor red circle with white cross. Volume is turned to 100%.

Double click on the speaker symbol in the bottom right hand corner and click Mixer. On the Devices drop down in the top left hand corner of the new box that appears, try all of the options, though the one with the most applications in the Mixer window is almost always correct.

Right click the speaker -> Open Volume Mixer
Code:
Device - max
Windows Sounds - max

Right click the speaker again -> Playback Devices -> Playback
[check] Speakers VIA Hight Definition Audio Working (already)

I think the problem is here. There are 4 items on "Sound"
-> Playback (tab)
Code:
- Digital Output Device (HDMI)
  High Definition Audio Device
  Working
- Speakers
  VIA High Definition Audio
  Working
- SPDIF Interface (TX1)
  VIA High Definition Audio
  Working
- Digital Output Device (HDMI TXO)
  VIA High Definition Audio
  Working

Highlight "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" -> Set Default -> Apply
Sound on LCD Display speaker alive. The vertical volume bar on the right moving/growing. But there is no sound on external speaker.

Another strange thing is sound continue to play even pulling out the audio jacket connected.

Select "Speak" and "Set Default" without improvement.

-> Properties
popup "Speakers Properties" window
-> Advance
On "Default Format" clicking [Test] external speakers plays sound.
Exclusive Mode
[check] Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device
[check] Give exclusive mode applications priority

The volume vertical bar on the right of "Speaker" doesn't move. But that of the "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" moving.
