Not so typical sound problems

First I have to say I am not as good with computers as I used to be. I am a DIY kinda guy and I want to try to fix this problem before paying someone to fix it for me.

Bare with me.

Computer is an HP Pavilion laptop with Vista Home.

Problems:

Windows sounds don't work (but it does make some when I turn on the computer - but then nothing).

When I watch a YouTube or Hulu video there is no sound.

When I watch an instant Netflix video sound DOES WORK. This is currently the only sound I am getting from this computer.

What I have done so far:

-Unistalled/reinstalled Adobe Flash.

-Rolled back the sound driver.

-Fiddled with all the sound settings I could find in the CP.

Also, I have reason to believe that an update did not install correctly.

Any help/ideas is appreciated. I am sick of searching the bottomless pit of information AKA the Internet.

Also when I test the Windows sounds in the CP it will make the sounds, but not outside of the test!

Hi bryan, welcome to vista forums

firstly to eradicate any problems you are experiencing, i would like to find out what sound card you have, to do this, can you please right click your sound icon in the notification area and go to playback devices, click on your speakers and go to properties, you should see something called "controller information", what does it say in there?

secondly, can you open up a browser window and go to youtube or a page with sound on it, then left click on your sound icon to bring up the slider bar and click on mixer, you should see something like this below:

make sure the volume is up on the browser slider :)

Did a system restore and updated everything. All sounds are working normally now.
I didn't want to resort to that, but whatever (and I wasn't sure it would do anything).

Anyway, thanks for your ideas and time!
