This tutorial from MS Support has a " fix it " application. See if it will help you in any way. I must warn you that its " batting average " is not good.
Diagnose and repair sound playback problems automatically

I have a " down-to-earth " suggestion....
Right click on your Volume icon at system tray > Playback Devices > click the Speaker with the word ' working ' under it > Properties > General tab, is Device Usage enabled ? > Levels tab > is the slider up or down ?

Could you please post the EXACT error message you are getting, word-for-word including any codes? What is the manufacturer, make and model of your computer? What device driver are you updating (or trying to update) - an audio device/card or speakers? Do you know the manufacturer, make and model of the audio device (it may be listed in Device Manager even if it isn't working).

Right click on the Volume icon in the notification area of the system tray, click on Playback Devices, click the Speaker with the word "working" under it, click Configure and make sure there is an option selected and then click on test to see if you hear any sounds. Did you? Go back to the Speaker screen and click on Controller Information Properties - does it say this device is working properly? If not, click on the Driver tab and please take a screenshot of that, save it as a .jpg file, and attach it to your next reply. Go back to the Sound page and click on the Sounds Tab. Does it have a sound scheme displayed or does it say No Sounds. If No Sounds, change it to Windows Default. Then below click on some of the various sound options and then click on test. Do you hear the sounds? Close all the screens.

Go back to the Volume icon and left click on it and click on mixer. Check all the scroll bars to make sure they are near the top. At the bottom of each is a small square box. Does it have a red dot in it? If so, click on it as the red dot indicates mute and by clicking you will remove mute. Do this for every item that shows in the mixer (there may be 2 or 3 or so).

While I hope some of these suggestions help to resolve the problem, I'm most interested at this point in the questions asked in the first paragraph. Those answers may help us a great deal in identifying the problem and providing suggestions to resolve it. Please be as detailed as possible.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and good luck!

P.S. Congrats djch129 on the new Badge!

Hi,

This sounds like a Microsoft driver has beeen installed as part of an update & is not fully compatable with your system. Is this something that could have happened?

Try going back to the original driver from your PC supplier. ie. don't install any windows driver when it finds the removed item. Use the downloaded installer file from the suppliers web site.
