Solved No Audio Output Device Installed and Red X

Hi, I need help with my brother's PC. Problem with sound and "no
audio output device installed" and red X on speaker icon. Went
to Device Manager = no "sound video and game controller" found?
Tried loading new realtek driver to no avail. Cannot do a re-
install as I can't find a Vista disc anywhere. Also, with this problem
everytime I view a picture file jpeg on a large scale the
computer freezes. I even bought a Driver Boost and that didn't
help as of now.

Apparently, these problems has been going on for more than 6
months now since the anti-virus program expired. I loaded AVG,
Ad-aware and Advanced system care a week ago to help out my
brothers pc. So far no luck except this forum - I hope...

I'm back at no sound and afraid to open any pictures as it will
freeze the pc. Any help? Where do I start now? This is my last week before
going back home.

What is a driver boost?
Start with a system file check.Go to start search and type cmd, hold shift and ctrl and press enter. An Administrator command prompt should open.
In the box that opens type sfc /scannow
If errors are found run it again. Restart your computer after running.

Realtek
Realtek sound driver is here and sometimes needs to be run twice, once to remove your existing driver and again to reinstall.

Thank you. DriverBoost (DriverBoost.com) is a software company that scans your PC for outdated and missing drivers, etc. which supposedly will do an automatic install as well, I guess. Run the scannow and Verification 100% completed. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity
violations. Restarted computer to no avail. Still showing Red X and NO SOUND VIDEO under device manager.

Also, tried to reinstall Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R2.57... it run and seems like it loaded properly as it took me all the way to the end and finished. Rebooted to no avail also. Still Red X and nothing on Device Manager?

Thank you both ilikefree and Shadowjk for helping... what's next to try?

Downloaded ATI HDMI Audio Device Version R2.55 from Realtek HD Audio Codec Driver.
Installshield Wizard completed, but found "NO Driver was supported in this driver package." Will download Malwarebytes next. Thanks again... I will even try and reboot the PC just to make sure I do it twice!!

No driver supported might mean wrong driver was downloaded.

EDIT:Go to device manager and expand the Sound Video and Game Controllers. Take a snip and post it for us to look at. Ta

Hi,

Go into the BIOS & check to see if there is a "Force active" & a "Auto" option for the sound device.

If so "force it" & complete a boot. Then reboot again & change it back to auto.

This worked on my PC so it could on yours?

ilikefree... I tried to download another driver under HD Audio Codec
Driver but to no avail. This time the Installshield wizard completed
properly and rebooted per instruction but still no Sound Video and
Game Controllers underf device manager. Tried to upload a picture
here but the PC became disabled. Will try to download the
malwarebytes and speccy later...

Lottiemansion... I tried to go into BIOS but I couldn't find it and
I ended up doing Basic Test on Hardware Diagnostic Tools all passed
though. Then, I think I found the Bios but didn't see "Force active"
although On Board - Audio was set to "Auto".
So, that's that still have same problems phew!!!

Didn't see your photo. In services check Windows Audio and its dependencies have started. Go to start search and type services.msc, go to Windows Audio and highlight it, Right click and go to Properties, Dependencies and see what needs to start with it. Make sure they are all set to Automatic in the start up section.
Your picture should be able to be uploaded by clicking on the paperclip and browse to the file, then click upload.

Great! Went to Dependencies section, found Multimedia Class Scheduler and Windows Audio End Point Builder running but Remote Procedure Call (RPC) = Stopped! Started it and changed settings to Automatic - see photo attached.

Device manager still the same No Sound Video option. Thanks for helping let me know what else I can do here? Wish I could just do a restore but we don't have the CD disc if I need any?

Hi again.

Have you managed to get into the BIOS yet?

The reason I know this works is after a Microsoft driver update (Silly me) I did a full recovery & my sound was still off (Red X). So I did the Bios thing & for me it started working again. Thank goodness.

So, power up the PC or reboot & press F10 to enter the BIOS setup.

Once there scroll along to the advanced configuration screen with the sound setting, Auto/ disable/ enable options.

  1. Then do a disable, boot into windows.
  2. Reboot into the BIOS & set enable, reboot into windows. Now it should be working.
  3. Go back into the BIOS & set Auto.
After all that, you should be go to go!

Hi,

Well sorry about that, sounds odd it hasn't worked for you. No screen shot needed for now.

Did you boot into windows after each setting change?

Now, complete the reboot sequence & see what happens.

Are you on your original HP sound driver set? If not, download them form HP: -

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-58189-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=2093&product=3436818&sw_lang

Uninstall all the sound device drivers in Control panel & in device manager (if there are any).

Enter the BIOS & enable the sound. Reboot & see if Windows now picks up on your Sound system.

If so, say no to installing the drivers for the found device & then once boot is completed, run the downloaded driver file.

i just got help from this forum so i thought i'd see if somebody had this problem, because i know the solution. i had the same problem with camstudio. no sound. anyway, here's the solution. now, as i said in my thankyou note in another thread- i'm not using vista so my directions might not be exact....just open "sound properties" and get to a window where where you see 'microphone' or 'speakers' (this is the important part) right click the white area where those icons or absense of icons are and you'll see a contextual menu that will solve your problems.
