Getting Hi Fi sound from a Laptop.

Hello,
I have a HP HDX 18 Laptop running Vista Home Premium (64bit). I also have an expensive Hi-Fi set up comprising Rotel RA06 Amp (80w p.c.) feeding floor standing IMF Speakers.
At the moment, if I want to hear my Laptop through this, I connect it via the HP's 35mm output socket to two Phono inputs to the amp. The sound is pretty poor, however.
From what I know I can go two ways....(1) put a DAC between the Laptop and the amp or (2) just connect up Logitech Speaker system..2.1 to the HP and listen this way. Actually, there might be a third way (3) connect a Soundblaster external sound card to the HP and listen this way. If I do any of these would I have to change the Realtek sound card within the Laptop ?
The DAC seems to me the way to go, albeit expensive, because I could also use it between my existing rather modest CD player in the Hi-Fi system and the Rotel Amp. As well as this it could be used between a Sony BDP S470 BluRay player and the amp as the Sony has the ability to play CDs as well SACDs also.

Should be very grateful of any advice in the matter.
