First, try restarting your computer. This will flush out any odd bugs that may have accumulated. You should restart your computer at least once a week to do this and improve performance.
If you've already restarted your computer since this started (or do and it doesn't fix it) try reinstalling RealPlayer. Also, try it with different files, and different filetypes if you can. Let me know if you still have issues after trying these.
Just adding to Slammer's excellent advice here, when you do come to uninstall Realplayer, make sure you do so with this:
Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily
Remove anything it finds in the scans

Thanks slammer, I always restart computer (I presume you mean when I shut down at night then switch on next morning). Not sure what you mean by trying different files or file types. If nothing else works I will uninstall it. Thanks
That's exactly what I mean. And for different file types, I mean is it just the "real player pop videos" that don't give you sound, or all videos/music files? (actually I have no idea what real player pop videos are to begin with. If you could explain those it would help) Basically we want to know if it's real player that's having a problem (as in nothing you play in real player has any sound), the "pop" files have a problem (they won't play in any program) or if it's just that real player has a problem with those types of "pop" videos (other media plays fine in real player, but the "pop" videos don't).
Hi, real player pop videos are just pop videos I have downloaded from youtube. Real player 5 allows you to download these. But you can download them from many sites where you play videos.
Um I'm still a little confused... Do you mean they have a .pop file extension, or they're "pop" music videos, or something else? If not, what file extension are they?
Hi, they're just videos I have downloaded from youtube. I don't know what you mean by file extensions.
Hmmm ok well if you used to RealPlayer download plugin they should be flash vids (with a .flv file extension, i think), we'll just go with that. Now I want you to go into My Videos and open the folder called Sample Videos. If you're on Windows Vista or 7 you can just go to Startbutton and just type Sample Videos into the search bar and then open it. Then I want you to right click on one of the files in there and select Open With and click RealPlayer. (if it's not in that little pull out menu you may have to select "Choose default program" and find it there) tell me if you get sound then.
Thanks for getting back to me. When I go to my videos and double click it all that appears is bbc iplayer and a programme I have downloaded. But on other videos which I have on my computer there is no sound. But when I play cds or listen to a downloaded programme e.g. BBC iplayer there is sound. I think I will take your first advice and uninstall realplayer then download it again. Thanks
