No sound in Vista PLEASE help

I recently moved and I did a proper shutdown on my computer, however when I set it back up at my new house I had no sound on my computer...not even the windows startup sounds.

I have the on board Realtek AC'97 audio and I don't know if this is coincidence or not but I also noticed upon rebooting my computer that my I-Tunes was not longer installed...

Here's what I have done so far..

Checked for updated drivers( says I have the most up to date already)
Uninstalled the Realtek and rebooted to allow Vista to reinstall it
Reinstalled I-Tunes thinking perhaps something there had caused a problem.
I have also written to Realtek tech support although I don't expect much from them.
I have checked the device manager for yellow flags and there are none.
Computer says the sound is working and the bar on my sound manager on my sys tray show sound but still nothing is coming from the speakers.

I have tried other speakers and I have tried ALL sound plugins so even if I was plugging it in wrong, I have tried them ALL now....nothing is working.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

    Thanks ins advance, Kevin

Re: No sound in Vista PLEASE help

I don't understand it at all but I occasionally get the same thing. The only thing I've found to work is to open Sound in Control Panel, make sure the speakers are set as the default and then select Configure for them. Then just start different variations of the settings. I have a 7.1 so I'll select that and check each speaker and, if they work, close out and Reboot. Sometimes I'll get sounds for some things and not for others but over time, everything mysteriously comes back. If that doesn't work, I'll go back in and change the settings back and forth (scientific isn't it? ). I also have a power switch for the speakers and sometimes just turning that off and on helps.

Just some ideas. It's all a mystery to me.

I have the same sound chip and software as you.

Speakers are my only option on that screen so they are automatically default (set default won't even highlight).

First time this has ever happened to me and I for one just don't understand it....by everything I know these speakers should be blasting.

Any other help would be appreciated

    Kevin

When you open up your Audio Manager, sometimes, you have to just double check settings and such. I have had this issue before and it somehow, ( i have no idea what i pressed ) started working, when i did the test thing, boom. Had stereo and could adjust the equalizer and such.

When you open up the Audio Manager , select the Sound Manager and then double check those.
