No audio output device is installed

I recently had to reinstall Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I have everything back in place except the audio

The Audio is listed as a
5.1 CH windows vista premium level HD audio
(via vt 1708S audio codec)
and I believe is integrated into the motherboard.

I have a red cross beside the speaker icon on the task bar.
And when I hover it say

"No audio output device is installed"

However, when I go into the section of Device Manager under Sound etc
it is listed as High Definition Audio device
and using 'properties' it tells me the device is working properly
and has the correct driver

I have tried updating the driver,
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the device
I have search for new hardwear
I haver tried the microsoft repair tool to no avail.

It was working perfectly, I reinstalled Vista, and it ceased to work.

Any suggestion of where to from here would be appreciated.

Hi alba100,

Let’s try run Microsoft fix-it to check if the services are enabled and drivers are installed properly: Automatically diagnose and fix Windows audio playback problems

If issue persists, please follow the link for detailed instructions: NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE INSTALLED....OR RED CROSS IN BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER ON VOLUME CONTROL

Also if issue persists, please provide me the following information:

1. Does the computer have external sound card?
2. Did you try to download the drivers from vendor’s website?

Please post the results.

Thanks Madhur,

I think I have resolved the issue.

The Microsoft Fix it did not help.

I searched "via vt 1708S audio codec" and downloaded a driver from a third party,
which appears to have done the trick.

Unfortunately I did not note the site, before restarting, so I can't be specific.

Thank you for your help.
