I personally find Avast! AV to be very good - No compatibility problems and a choice of free or paid subscription.

If you were using Kaspersky 7 and were happy with it you can continue using it on Vista X64.I've used it and it works great!

Go through the "Vista Antivirus" threads in this Section (System Security) to get an idea of what most people are using.

using nod32 x64 3.0.563.0 and i have not had a problem with spyware, adware, or virus yet. however the nod kernel .exe is actually 32 bit in task manager, even though i installed the 64 bit version... i don't think im as safe as a true 64 bit antivirus would be

Re: Wich Antivirus is best for Vista .. ?

There seems to be a conflict of opinion on this issue. I bought a new computer about 2 months ago, with Vista OS, and researched the issue quite a bit before setting up my box.

The reviewers at many of the PC magazines praised The Norton Security suite quite highly. However, in reading the comments of ordinary users such as myself, there was almost unanimous condemnation of Symantec's product. So I went with Trend Micro's Internet Security Suite 2008, which was highly recommended by Consumer Reports magazine, a source I trust. So far, I've had absolutely no complaints with the software.
There were no installation problems and it's easy to set up and use. I bought it for $40. on Amazon and you can install it on up to 3 computers. Since I have 3, it worked out great for me.

Jim,

I would avoid anything Norton or McAfee for now. There has been way to many reported problems with these programs and Vista.

I use Avast and have had no problems. Plus, I have had not one virus. The program is fully customizable to.

The only problem I've had at all with my Trend Micro software was that I had to disable it in order to install a router. And I blame the router software for the conflict more than the security suite.

Yeah using Norton Antivirus or McAfee sometimes hang your computers.
I used at Vista Home Premium 32bit, it hangs then crash.
After uninstall Norton Antivirus and install Avast, more stability.
But how about Windows Defender? Does it an antivirus too?

Hi Heleequemta,

It's more of a anti-spyware program, but it can help catch a virus to. It's not a substitute for or as thorough as a antivirus program.

Re: Wich Antivirus is best for Vista .. ?

I'm very satisfied with Symantec Endpoint Security 11. Covers antivirus, anti-spyware, Pro-active threat detection and Network Threat protection (kind of mini firewall). A tad pricey, but runs well with Vista.

Re: Wich Antivirus is best for Vista .. ?

I'm a user of Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 7. No compatibility issue found.
NOD32 is reported much faster than kaspersky (3 times) and a little loss of accuracy on virus scanning... (1% below kaspersky's score).
I have no idea about the 64bit Vista. there're too many av software testing sites and their reports vary alot; purely putting your faith in them would not result a best suited for your own. You just try them out; get started from the safest product (personally, i think kaspersky 7 indeed can be counted in the safests; you can get reports from the net.) The time wouldn't be long before you find a better replacer.

Hello...

I went for the Kaspersky Internet Suite (for both AV and Firewall). And I am sooo happy with it that I have turned into a part-time sales person for the company! Unfortunately, I don't get paid commission.

I wouldn't go with Live OneCare at all on Vista 64. I had it on my system, and it caused so many problems, it wasn't even funny. Among the errors that Live OneCare caused, it would always prob my wireless router on bootup, when it didn't need to. On top of this, Live OneCare 2.0 doesn't get along with NFORCE networking drivers earlier than August 2007.

I use Nod32. Great program. Some people report connection outage when using Kaspersky..not everyone, but a few. It seems to mess with explorer security layers too much. Anyways,,my 2p worth.

Not had any problems with IE not connecting to the net. Mainly due to the fact I use Firefox and I have little reason to use IE. The few times I have used it, its been fine.

I suppose it is a case of seeing what is best for you and to stick to it.

Re: Wich Antivirus is best for Vista .. ?

I've been using NOD32 for at least two years now. I've never had any issues with it in either XP or now with Vista. Hardly notice it's there. It just quietly goes about it's business. I get a tiny little window at my taskbar when it updates, that's about it.
