Re: Whats the Best Antivirus/ Security Suite??

I get by with Defender and The shield, which uses Kaspersky technology. The reason for The Shield was that I like Kaspersky and The Shield was cheap. I've had it 5 years now and it's served me well (touch wood). The combination of these and Firefox seems to keep me fairly well insulated.

Just don't move too fast and forget to try NIS2009.
Post your impression here after, or just pm it if you fear going public . I'm curious, because *everyone* scream bloat when I say norton, and it's always nice to see their jaw drop when I'm right. hehe.
Norton AV 2009 is definably way better on handling resources last time I tried it...I dunno about NIS2009

I don't use any virus program either. Never have. Though, there are SO MANY different scenarious depending on the person that can merit whether or not a person should have one, me personally, I do not need one.
I dont use AV either and use myspace, facebook, play games... UAC and Defender defiantly do a good Job removing the need for AntiVirus

Theres always a VM for the really questionable stuff

Wrong!

I'm a very very simple computer user. I know all about hacking and modifying and altering programs galore. So knowing so much I guess justifies not needing a virus program.
Wrong again! It justifies INSTALLING an antivirus. My main computer has been running without active antivirus for quite some time. I STILL do manual scans regularly. NIS2009 changed that though, I run it with all features on with minimal impact on performance.

Before I upgraded to Vista, having just XP. I had all the latest updates by default and never used any other program whatsoever. Now, having Vista, it comes with Windows Defender, but I've never needed to worry. I've run it once and it found nothing. So it's kind of useless actually, to me.
Wrong again! It's the same as saying "I ran an antivirus once a year ago, it detected nothing so I figure I don't need it"...

So I had given them Nortan Anti-Virus but too many times it just seemed like it caused a lot of problems and for the cost it wasn't worth it.
Yes, that's the recent track record of norton for the last few years. Norton Internet Security 2009 is something rather different, but as you don't care about having your computer in a botnet it's likely all the same to you.

I read about some others, compared them all, and narrowed it down to OneCare. It's pretty efficient. The nice thing is, it integrates itself with your Live ID (hotmail.com email account if you have one) so you can register your PC in what they call their OneCare Circle. As well, you can add 2 or 3 other PC's to it, under one subscription. So for a family, that's handy.

Lastly, it runs with little resources. It doesn't prompt you to update. It also comes with a Tune-Up feature, that Scans your system for viruses, defragments your system, checks for windows updates and removes unecessary files to keep your system clean, all the while running in the background.

So, I have used it for a while to test it out, and it works flawlessly. You can tell it to even prompt you every time any program chooses to access the interenet (in the Firewall settings) and once you select allow, it won't prompt again, but it's up to the user.
I can't subscribe to onecare in sweden, so I wouldn't know. I doubt it's as efficient as some of the older suites out there, but I've not seen any numbers on it so it's just prejudice.

Scan for viruses - Yepp.. NIS2009 does that
Defragments my system - Yepp.. Vista does that periodically for me already..
Checks for windows updates - Yepp.. Vista does that....
Remove unnecessary files - That's in Vista too... Though I prefer nCleaner.
Firewalling -Yepp.. NIS2009 does that. Even the default firewall in vista does that to some extent...

And NIS2009 doesn't prompt me to update anything either btw...

It also tries to do back ups for you. The backup feature is pretty nice. It will backup system files and important documents (photos, emails, etc) for you. You can choose which files to otherwise, but minimally it's good to have a system back up, and it fits it all onto one cd (without the photos, music and such).

So that's my input.
Cool description of the *already built in* features of Windows Vista... I'm impressed.

Btw... I couldn't fit my important documents (without photos and music and such) onto one CD with a crowbar, it's over 1GB compressed.

Guys,

Take a look at this report, The only AV to pass was Symantec with 3%

both of us dont use Antivirus... why the hell should we?

We are both experienced enough to spot suspicious files and deny these files UAC rights so the virus is harmless...

Its been nearly two years since Vista was released and I have not had to use AV once and have had no virus`s or malware infect my system...

Being aware of entry points like websites, e-mail and IM make it really damm easy to spot suspicious files...

E-mail:
If i get an attachment from someone I always reply and ask them what they sent...UAC will stop anything from gaianing full administrator rights so seeing UAC prompt itself while opening an attachment is a huge indicator its a virus

Websites:
Well UAC runs them as a 'sandbox' so their not going to get much further than that

IM:
I can just ask them instantly

UAC makes windows security like linux(UAC has all the same features as SU, works exactly the same as SUDO and protects the filesystem like linux does)
If it was never included with windows I definalty would be using a AV and have a totally different story...If I go back to using XP even with Antivirus I can 100% guanantee you beyond doubt I would be infected within hours every day

Dmex, I see the logic. and I agree. But. I need a dummy. And, I always lock the door behind me. So, I am still gonna use an antivirus.

No it doesnt work exactly like SUDO. SUDO requires initiation by the user, which is a FAR better method of solving the security issue. It would be better to have any automatic installation just fail unless it's manually initiated. Regular Joe will quickly learn that "UAC means click accept", and render it useless. System updates should be encrypted by a secure keypair so they can be easily verified as authentic.

Because every single day you need to cancel UAC prompts you didn't initiate? An updated XP is not THAT much unsafer than Vista...

Now that statement is TOTAL BUNK!!
No major and respected AV online scan would EVER do this....EVER! Symantec, Eset, and other major AV companies have far too much to lose by pulling that crap with online scans, only shady AV vendors and antimalware scans will pull that kind of act, so please maybe you should stop posting such FUD as that.

You can argue your point on your choice of AV product all you want, that's your right as long as you post verifiable statistics from respected test facilities to back them up (if you use stats), but when you lump ALL online scans into that (False Positives for sales purposes) bracket you're posting pure FUD and misleading less savy users. If you "claim" to be big IT guy you should know better than that.
