Hi Marc,

Welcome to the forums.

Don't know if you've done this, so will mention. Start/control panel (classic view)/Windows Firewall. Press the turn on/off button on the top left. Make sure 'turned on' is selected.

Another possibility is to use another firewall. Comodo Firewall Pro is a good free one. Link here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/115872-free-software-list-vista.html

Hope this helps.

Gary

Go into the start menu, in the search bar type:

msconfig

then go to the "Startup" tab, and there should be an option in there called "Windows Defender", make sure that the tick box by all ones that say Windows Firewall. This should defend your PC a bit more if your firewall will not start, and then you can download another firewall, a few have been mentioned earlier.

Hope that helps,
Josh

I had this same problem with another firewall. Went into services-nothing. Went into msconfig.-nothing. Task Manager-nothing. Yet when I went to Security Center, it showed that firewall as running and since running 2 firewalls can cause probs., windows firewall wasn't started. I could start WF, but then I got a warning 2 firewalls running. A removal tool was able to remove whatever was causing the other firewall to show as running. Probably a registry entry. This is why I thought maybe the removal tool would help. From what I understand, it's for when the removal via Programs and Features doesn't get the whole job done.

Dont waste your time behind troubleshooting. Its an OS problem, reinstall your OS and then install free AVG. avoid using norton as its just a peice of junk.
Note: back up data before reinstalling OS.

Does AVG have its own firewall that could be shutting down the Windows Firewall?

Also, have you checked the Event Log? Look for entries during and just after booting in the System log. There might be something indicating why the Windows Firewall was did not start, or was later turned off during the system startup phase.

(Event Log is found: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Log)

FreeAVG does not have an inbuilt firewall.

I'd still check the event log and see what it says.

If Norton was the problem, using the Restore CD will not do anything since the Acer was preloaded with Norton - using the Acer Restore CD will just put Norton right back on there.

Better to check the logs and actually fix the problem.
