Uncertainty leads to this question, but is it safe to uninstall the highlighted previous updates for Java 6?

It's not only Ok it's actually, IMHO, advisable to do so - whilst the older versions remain there, any vulnerabilities that were corrected in later issues, remain on your machine and thus there is a possibility of them being used to compromise your machine :D

The risk although small is there so I always make it a part of a new Java install the removal of the last one - why the developers do not do this automatically has always been a mystery to me :(

Java's been updated to 6_12 now Sasso so if you didn't know.

I switch it off too Nigel, but I check every now and then. It came out a few days ago I believe.

I think it said the same thing to me. Just uninstall your java and get it from the link stormy posted, you can get the 32 and the 64 from the 64 bit link, you just have to select Windows for the 32 bit from the drop down menu. But I'm sure you already know that. :D

Since version .10 Java should no longer stack itself as new versions come out - should owerwrite/replace not add. Or so I understand it...

As of JDK 6u10, patch-in-place installation is the default, and the JRE installs itself in a directory called jre6. Previously, it would have installed itself in a directory called jre1.6.0_10. That is, by default, the jre6 directory is patched with the updated version.

I think it said the same thing to me. Just uninstall your java and get it from the link stormy posted, you can get the 32 and the 64 from the 64 bit link, you just have to select Windows for the 32 bit from the drop down menu. But I'm sure you already know that. :D

Aaron and Nigel. I configured updates to auto-notify only each month. No auto install, because the program is installed on M:\Drive, my external HD.

Hello Joan, nice to see you......Java is a part of the suite of programs.... OpenOffice.org, updated Version 3.0.1, which I find easier to negotiate than MS Office, and with better features. Thanks for the links Tony but they're not something I need, I did know about the Open Office programs but as I've always had Microsoft Office and never had problems haven't seen the need to change.

The only one I've had to pay for was Microsoft WorksSuite 2001 which is on my WinME machine, nearly forgot I did buy a standalone copy of Excel XP and it cost me just over £200 :mad: I've been given as presents versions 2000 Premium and 2003 Professional but I now have Home and Student 2007 which I won in a draw in another forum I belong to. From all of them I only use Excel don't even use Word that much. ;)
