    Symantec Antivirus 10.2

    Hello all,

I just recently purchased this laptop HP Pavilion and I have the corporate Symantec Antivirus 10.2. The laptop is the x64 but will the Antivirus work on a x64 machine? What do you guys think of the laptop?

    Thanks!

Symantec 10 corporate x64 will run. Though you would probably be better off with a better performing antivirus product.

    Pavillion dv4-1225dx with 4GB RAM
Well it is kind of an outdated technology, But for $600 It is a decent notebook.
Turion cores (RM-72) are slow @2.1Ghz (good for basic multi-tasking), but designed for low power consuption) This GPU is slightly less powerful than the Core2Duo T5600 Merom-2M @1.8Ghz , which is a low end dual core Processor by Intel.

ATI Radeon HD 3200 DX10 (equivalent to the Geforce 8400M GS)
The AMD ATI Radeon (Mobility) HD 3200 is an onboard (Integrated shared Memory) graphics chip (on the RS780M chipset). It is based on the HD 2400 graphics core and features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos (Avivo HD).

    Class 3 GPU
Low-Midrange Graphics Cards - Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

    Summary (WEI score of 3.0?)
Your processor performs at the equivalent of an Intel Core2Duo T5600 1.8Ghz
low-end integrated GPU with shared memory- Not recommended for games due to lack of dedicated memory
For Office/Internet/HD movies, it should be just fine.
If your intent is to play games I suggest this before you purchase them (run it under 32-bit browser):http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

Symantec 10 x64. They have always been funny about not running 32-bit Antivirus on x64 platforms.

try one of these free ones then...

    Re: Symantec Antivirus 10.2

I recently purchased a DV5-1113us, which has almost identical specs.

I find it to be quite acceptable, especially for the price.

When I researched the graphics available in this class of laptop, the HD 3200 was much better than most of the intel based adapters, although I would prefer dedicated video memory.

My WEI is 3.8 (video is the lowest), using the latest video drivers increased this just a bit.

Processor: 4.9, RAM: 5.9, Graphics: 4.1, Gaming graphics: 3.8, Primary hard disk: 5.3

Not too shabby for sub $1k category.

Here is a VERY IMPORTANT TIP!!!

Do NOT (repeat: DO NOT!) install the hard drive update on the windows update site. I believe it updates the ProtectSmart Hard Drive Sensor...

If you do, you will NEVER be able to you ProtectSmart again. It is a one way street, requiring a complete system reload from original disks (you did make recovery disk using HP's software, right?)

Just hide it under windows update to avoid it completely.

FYI, for you non-HP users: ProtectSmart is the technology that is supposed to lock down the read/write heads of your hard drive if it senses a fall or shock to protect your drive from internal damage. It does nothing for the case that smashes on the ground

Tip: I use Shock4way 3D for multiple desktops on the same screen. It is the best piece of s/w I use.

I am using the supplied NIS 15.5.023 (after the online updates) and it works pretty well. Symantec does NOT have a 64 bit version of this, but says they are working on it (that info is about a month old, so if it's changed, someone please correct me). I'm considering AVG, but not decided yet.

QuickPlay is a bit quirky, as are the top quickplay buttons, but after updates they are pretty stable, only occasionally requiring a reboot to reset the sound.

Set the system to sleep on closing the lid, and it sleeps in about 3-5 seconds! This fails about 1 out of 30 times or so, but that's not unusual for windows systems.
