Solved About COMODO

I have been using Avira free antivirus and want to change because Avira reboots my computer each time it puts a daily update. It started this with its latest version. Another reason I want to change is because I cannot get into the Avira forums. I have contacted them and reset the password and still cannot get in. I also re-registered using another user name and email and still cannot. I am tired and ready now to move on .

I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Does COMODO have an anti-virus only for 64 bit? I do NOT want the Internet Security. Only the Antivirus. And is COMODO as good as Avira? I am not that familiar with this software.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jillian,

If you are only looking for a good antivirus program, then the free Avast Home Edition is a great one for both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista. You do need to register for a free license number once a year though.

If you are wanting a firewall program instead, then Comodo Internet Security is a good free choice. Only the Internet Security version is available now though. However, during installation, you have the option to install only the Comodo firewall or antivirus, or both.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thank you Brink. This was very helpful. I think I will try the COMODO . Do you think it is as good as Avira?

You're welcome Jillian.

For antivirus, I would go with Avast though. For a firewall, I would go with Comodo. Comodo's antivirus is still not as good as Avast or Avira yet.

firewall test results:
Results and comments - www.matousec.com

Comodo is the best rated firewall (along with Online Armor and Outpost Firewall), but unlike those two it's completely FREE. As Brink said, you should install only Comodo Firewall and use some other AV, personally I use NOD32 v4 + Comodo Firewall, quite strong protection.

Cheers,
Miki

the firewall from ESS , is not made for this tests ..it is just a simple firewall without hips functions. That means it will not score high on matousec or pcflank. Im using the software about 1 Year , and also my collegues , and it works well. When a true trojan ,or issue with firewall comes it works great , what is not catched by the firewall is catched from other modules. As you know , it is working with more modules. ..

I loved Esets AV and was very happy when smart security came out , but it fails leaktests , everyone i tried. It should have flagged them up and asked what i wanted to with them , it didnt and this worried me a little. This was the full suite all working together not on automatic filtering , none of the modules picked it up. Perhaps with UAC running too that would make smart security a better option. Surely one of the most basic jobs of a firewall is to stop malicious incoming and outgoing traffic?

Tell me why it failed and convince me its safe and ill reinstall it , but all i keep hearing is that they only test the firewall not the whole suite , well i tested the whole suite and still got the same results , sure it passes GRC's tests but ive passed them with XP's firewall and we all know how usefull that was.

Im not an expert by any means but i do know how to set a firewall up and i do know how to create custom rules , i tried setting rules for all my apps and tried blocing everything else it didnt work , Commodo's firewall didnt block the leaktests as such , but it wouldnt let me run them till id dec;ared them safe/unsafe , Eset makes me do this everytime i run a new online game so why not flag leaktests up as potentially harmfull? what if it were a trojan that slipped through the net passing on sensitive information?

Please if im way of the mark here and im being a muppet ill hold my hands up , ive paid for smart security and i want to run it , at the moment im running the standalone Nod AV with commodo because it passes the tests , I have no other way of confirming whether a or not a firewall is any good , i have to try these tests how else can i make sure our information is safe?

I cant rely on what you guys are saying at the moment as you all seem to be singing of the same songsheet so to speak ;)

Comodo does come in a version intended only for 64 bit computers. Ive been using Comodo internet Security for just under a year, and its great. I wouldnt change to nother one even if you paid me, since it has so many security features that you just dont get on other products (Or do, but are severly cut down)

Its also got memory buffer firewall to stop buffer overflow attacks, and right now is going through a beta period to add the boclean memory scanner as well.

I must admit tho, the interface can be a little complicated right now, but since theyve been adding all the features for these past few months while its been released, theyve decided to leave the interface until everything has been integrated for version 4.0

uninstallation has never been a problem for me. Only when a new 'big' update (ie version 3.8 to version 3.9) comes out do you really need to uninstall to install the new version, the only problem then is that you need to redo all the settings again.

Default settings should be fine, i just change 1 or two options & make sure the alert timeout is always at 999 seconds, not 120 incase i miss one by mistake. Also, make sure you have the threatcast feature turned on. The servers arent working for it right now, but it tells you what other users have done when an alert pops up.
