System restore services missing from list of services!

I am running windows vista home premium and I decided to create a new partition in order to install windows seven, unfortunately when I tried shrinking my default drive, it was showing me that I can't shrink my volume. This was due to the fact that some system files were at the end of my hard disk and needed to be moved to the back, I archived this by using PerfectDisk 10 and following these instructions:

Working Around Windows Vista’s "Shrink Volume" Inadequacy Problems :: the How-To Geek

After creating the partition, I tried re-enabling all the important system services, which turned out successful at first until today. After installing some software and trying to undo it by system restore, I noticed in my list of system restore points was empty.

I then went into administrative tools and looked at my list of system services, unfortunately system restore services was missing. While I was looking through my list of services, I also noticed that two symatec services were still listed but disabled

1) Symantec Event Manager 2) Symantec Settings Manager

Could these be some leftovers of Norton 360 (which I stopped using about 5 months ago and replaced with AVG Internet Security) or Norton Internet Security (Which was at default installed on my computer by HP)? Are they the cause of system restore not functioning anymore?

What could have happened? how may I re-enable system restore? please reply ASAP.
I would really appreciate it if just one of you Vista Admins could help me in solving this problem, thank very much in advance.

Hi Mr Electrifyer, post xp-"system restore" service is known "volume shadow copy" service. is this still there if so is system restore turned on and have you tried a manual restore point or is system restore itself missing. If you can create a manual restore point then you may have to have a look in task scheduler and reenable tasks or create new ones http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/132903-task-scheduler-create-task.html I hope this is of some help, as for the Norton reg keys they are left over and have to be manually removed (but are doing no harm if just left there unless they are interfering with your current AV? shouldnt be) even the Norton removal tool doesnt remove them it actually adds an extra one "sym/NRT". well i hope all this helps you find some answers, all the best

thank you so much mitchell, yes "volume shadow copy" service is still in the list of services and it is set to manual. I tried creating a restore point manually and it worked as it should.

But any ideas on what could have caused all my restore points to disappear? Is it windows that is automatically deleting them? is there a way I could set a time period for restore points (I'm thinking of setting it to at least a month if they are not manually deleted by me)? Would really appreciate hearing from you again, and again, thank you so much.

Glad to hear you got some resolution, manual is the default setting for volume shadow copy. i have never used a partition tool but it may just be a windows thing like when you install SP 1 it deletes all your previous restore points
If you go into task schuduler & select system restore then triggers highlight a task then in the right hand pane select properties then triggers again then edit from here you can adjust your set rules for the task
