Virus? shuts down laptop every 59 seconds!?

Hi! A very nice nursing student asked me for a laptop to help her studies and maybe make a little income along the way. I got her a Compaq Presario V2000 (Windoz XP Professional). It has been serving her needs quite well.
But now she calls and says it shuts down every 59 seconds so she hasn't time to run any of its programs like antivirus or IE to connect to web to run maybe LiveOne scan or others.
She has asked me to mail her a CD that will be self-booting and contain a good antivirus (and I would say, something like Malwarebyte too) on it, that will run and clean up her computer so she can use it again. (After that, i need to talk to her more about protective programs for the machine....)
She is of the opinion that the infective agent may be "worm.win32.nightshade or something like that." Quoting her. This Could possible be a form of the netsky virus, I can't be sure. At any event, I tried to shop for a curative CD for her problemo. All the CD's I could find contained very old antivirus programs (with three years or older virus definitions ....and most do not even say they remove those viruses..they talk only about "scanning for viruses" whereas we need a scan and a REMOVAL, that is a real antivirus program that works.... with current uptodate viral defintions. And a good malware type additive.
Can anyone recommend any such CD, or else any other means she may be able to restore functionality?
She is a very nice person, a lady whose husband ran out on her and her 3 kids and she has raised them all by herself and is now trying to finish up as an RN so she can help other folks while supporting herself in her later years....
so anyways, THANKS again so very much for any helpful advice on this.. I am 3000 miles from Tennessee so can't check things out personally so please do best to suggest cures that are both effective, of course, and EASY if at all possible. Thanks Thanks :geek:TGIF

THANK YOU! I have sent her 3 of the 4 suggested Bootable AntiVirus CD s.
(could not get the second one to transfer for some reason or other). Sure do appreciate the help !! Again. Thanks we will see if she can get one of them to work . if so, I have sent her detailed outline of how to thoroughly scan and remove all infections..... and then how to make sure her windows programs are uptodate now and in future, and how to protect against both viruses and malware on an ongoing automatic basis (with additional manual scans for certain purposes).

If she can get it going. We will see, THANKS! THANKS! again, tgif

Hi, TGIF.

Tell the student that she can disable this shutdown by following the steps below during the countdown:

1. Click on Start, Run
2. Type in CMD and press ENTER
3. Type in the following command and press Enter

SHUTDOWN -A

She should then be able to update her antivirus software and scan the computer.
