Opening firewall ports 8080 & 8888

Didn't really see a specific place to post this so I thought I'd start here. I'm trying to get some software to work and oviously it's not. The tech support for this company (X10) is telling me that I need to open ports 8080 and 8888. I've been looking every where I can for instructions on how to do this. Don't want to pay the Geek Squad if it's something that I can do. So I'm asking does anyone know where I can get specific detailed instructions on how to open ports 8080 & 8888? Also is there some kind of way I can test these ports once they are open. Thanks in advance for any and all help :).

you should try contacting your internet service provider and informing them that you have had advice from a software company telling you to open certain ports. your ISP can access all information about your line settings once you have given them your account details.

they will tell you if the port is or is not active and will guide you through process of opening it (most will only help if you still use the router supplied by them when you signed up with that company.)

Make sure you get the correct TCP OR UDP ports from the software company, it might cause problems if the wrong ones are opened

Sorry scousa4lyf, guess I should have mentioned that I have already contacted my ISP provider and the normal tech support would not assist with this . They would only offer help as to what the provide on a normal basis. They referred me to their Tech Connect department which has a price tag of $90.00. So is ovious that I will not be using them.

Yes Katokato, I guess I do mean port forwarding. Seems this is referred to in different ways. Will try your recomendation in the post and get back to you. Thanks

Hello Welcome to VF !!

We could help you with it !! What is the model of your Router ?? Also check with your ISP and get your Router Username and Password they should not charge you for that. Once we have both then the process should be quiet easy. And also what Firewall are you using in your Local System apart from Windows Firewall ??

Good Luck,
Captain

My Computer

Well I can tell you that I have att uverse. I'll look at the router when I get home to see what the model is and if my memory serves me correctly I have the password written down, but I didn't know there was a user name for the router.

Thanks for the help.

My Computer

OK I believe I have all the requested informattion but I am not sure about what firewall I am using. Is there a particular name I should be looking for? Thanks

My Computer

Ok I followed the steps that were provided in the post above. I had to create two applications. One for port 8080 and one for port 8888. Do I have two creat two application names? If so can they be the same name? I choose X10-Multiview since it was listed as a program. Now it's on to testing the ports

My Computer

Ok after all that work my port failed when I ran the port tester. The result said "Your port is NOT OPEN or not reachable. This happens on both the ports I tested. I had my anti virus turned off. Step 1 in the instructions asy to foward the port to IP addy 192.168.65. How do I do that?

Thanks

What is the model of your router, if you need to only portforward we can easily assist you if we have information about your router.

Opening ports 8080 and 8888:

Type in the IP address if your router in the URL bar. You can figure out the ipaddress of your router by going into a command prompt and typing in ipconfig, and looking at the ipv4 addres section.

Once you are the webgui of your router, at the top click the firewall tab.

Then click the firewall settings button.

In the screen you should see the steps, they are: select computer, edit firewall settings for this computer.

Choose a computer from the choose a computer drop downlist, this computer is the computer that you will be forwarding ports to.

Then on step2, in the box of hosted applications, click add a new user-defined appliction link.

You will see a form to fill out, so type in the name of the application (doesnot matter if the name is accurate, it is just for identification purposes only).

Choose the protocol that you want to port forward with (TCP/UDP), if you need to portforward both, eg. you need to forward 8888 tcp and udp, then you will create two applications, one with port 8888 TCP, and another aplication (perhaps <application here> number 2) that portforwards with TCP, so you will be covering both protocols.

Type in the port that you want to portforward to. First we will do port 8080, so type in from port 8080 to port 8080. I dont think it will be required to fill in the map to host port, and the port timeout boxes, but if the application requires these detailed setting you can fill them out. Leave the application type as default.

Then click add definition.

Go back to the firewall tab.

Select your computer, and in the no.2 section you will see a list of user applications, choose the one that you made and click add, so it will be in the hosted applications section.

Now, we want to add ports 8888 to 8888, so do the same thing as described above, exceptadd it as a different name but similar to the original one, and forward to 8888 to 8888, and add it to the hosted applications (same thing goes if you want to forard with multiple protocols).

Hope you understand it. I researched most of my information here: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/2wire/3800HGV-B/BYOND_Dream_Seeker_Host.htm

It has instructions for an application, but i left the application part out and only wrote the portforwarding section.

Yes I followed this procedure last night almost to the "T". The only thing i didn't do was fowarded them to the UPR protocol. Didn't think I had to. But when I ran the test it failed as I mentioned in my post. Maybe I fat figured something. I will retry the steps again and post the results. Really appreciate you taking the time to list the steps in detail. THANKS!!!!!!!!!

My Computer

OK Katokato, I followed your steps. Some of the screens appeared a little differently that what your post said but for the most part the steps were the same. After I fowarded the ports I ran the port tester that was sent to me and it now shows port 8080 and 8888 now open. However out of grins and giggles I went into my setup to see what port my pc was on just to run a test. It tells me the port is not open or unreachable. Why is that when my pc is working just fine.

Thanks for the help.

My Computer

if the port scaner shows 8080 and 8888 open then it is the software that you are workign with's problem. hmm, what software are you using that needs those ports to be open anyways?

Sorry maybe I wasn't too clear. After following the steps you sent for opening the ports and running the port scanner I had success. The scanner shows port 8080 & 8888 open. I even ran the scanner today and it still shows the ports open. So I think I have the ports open as need be per the scanner. What I was sayng was just for the fun of it I thought I'd look at the ports my pc is on. When I ran the scanner on my PC ports it said the port is not open or unreachable. I didn't undersatnd that because my pc seems to be working OK. Maybe I didn't get the correct port. Can you tell me the most acuurate way to find the port my pc is working on?

But to answer your other question I have a security camera system that will allow me to monitor the cameras remotely via the internet. I got the system from X10 Security Systems and per their instructions I need to have the ports 8080 & 8888 open in order to do so. I haven't actually downloaded their software yet to test but will probably do that tonight and then I can see if it's actually working or not.

One other question. When I run the port scanner at the very top under instruction #1 it says "Foward the port you want to test in your router to this IP address:xxx.xxx.x.xx. Why and how do I do this?

Meh. This is a bit out of my knowledge sorry for the disappointment. Maybe a wikipedia article might help?
I never used x-10's security cameras before. Maybe you can contact their customer support.

Ok we'll disregard the X10 stuff for the moment. As I have posted earlier I haven't downloaded their software yet. So I don't know if it works or not. I just wanted to get the ports set up. But again my question is..... When I run the port scanner that was sent to me via this forum at the very top under instruction #1 it says "Foward the port you want to test in your router to this IP address:xxx.xxx.x.xx. Why and how do I do this?

Thanks
