    Corrupt Parental Controls File

    Hello,

I am running Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit.

I ran SFC (System File Checker) today and it found several corrupt files it could not repair. One was esrb.rs (in System32 directory), which is a games ratings system file for parental controls.

Using full admin rights, I have been unable to get parental controls to work at all (a problem that has been posted on this forum before by other Vista users) and I am hoping that replacing the corrupt esrb.rs file may help.

Does anyone know how/where I can find a copy of a non-corrupt esrb.rs file, so that I can replace my corrupt copy of this file?

Any ideas or alternative solutions would be appreciated.

    Hello,

You have said that you are using only SP1. I would strongly recommend upgrading to Vista SP2 and all updates for full security and functionality. If upgrading to SP2 does not fix this issue (it might) or you have a very good reason not to upgrade, have a copy from my installation, re-run SFC (It will still show as an error, as the versions may not exactly match, which is another reason to upgrade to SP2) and then tell me what problems remain.

Thanks. I have installed Service Pack 2 but the parental controls problem still exists. I will run SFC again this afternoon, and I will let you know the results of the SFC run.

In addition to being unable to access parental controls, another less important issue is that the Vista games (Chess Titans, Solitaire, etc) --with the solitary exception of Inkball-- will not run. Again, I think this is related because I believe these games have game ratings-- and probably ESRB game ratings.

Also, certain images will not display when logging onto any Standard User (i.e., any user subject to parental controls). For example, the MSN logo on MSN's home page will not display, nor will the Google logo on Google's home page; and the Slideshow gadget that comes with Vista does not display pictures/images, but only the "red x".

    Hello,

Once SFC has run, put in the file I gave you, re-run SFC, and then can you tell me what problems remain? Once you have run SFC for the second time, can you please parse the logs, and then upload the sfcdetails.txt that has been created on your Desktop. The Command Prompt command to parse the logs is:

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

and full details can be found here if necessary: System Files - SFC Command will go from there.

    Thanks!

    Re: Corrupt Parental Controls File

I have just now run SFC a second time, and esrb.rs is still corrupt.

There are two other files that cannot be repaired by SFC, but esrb.rs is the only one that it refers to as "corrupt" and is the only one that pertains to parental controls. (The two other files are cambriab.ttf and tpm.sys.) All three files had the same status before I installed SP2.

More specifically, CBS log says with respect to esrb.rs "Could not reproject corrupted file" and then "source file in store is also corrupted."

Next, per your advise, I will use your esrb zip file and then run SFC again, and parse to sfcdetails.txt.

    Hello,

I will continue with this once you have tried that file, and you have uploaded the new sfcdetails.txt. Thanks!

Hope you are still around-- I finally got around to continuing to attempt to resolve this issue.

I replaced the esrb.rs file with the one you uploaded, and re-ran SFC /scannow.

The sfcdetails.txt file after re-running SFC /scannow is attached to this post.

Interestingly, the log no longer refers to the esrb.rs file as "corrupted"; however, it still produces a "Cannot repair member file" log entry as follows:

"Cannot repair member file [l:14{7}]"esrb.rs" of Microsoft-Windows-ParentalControlsRatingSystem-GameRatingsSystems, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch"

    Any ideas?

Yep, still around! Welcome back! Can you please confirm for me that the problem still remains even with that new file? Thanks!

Just writing a longer response now.

    Re: Corrupt Parental Controls File

OTL - Download or alternative link here and here

    Download OTL to your Desktop
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    /md5start
    cambriab.ttf
    esrb.rs
    tpm.sys
    /md5stop

    • Click the None button, followed by the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
      • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt These are saved in the same location as OTL.
      • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post them here.

The problem still remains but I am getting a different error message now when attempting to use parental controls. The new error message is:

"Unable to set user settings for administrators or unknown users."

Despite the different error message, the problem and its symptoms are exactly the same. They have not changed.

To clairfy what the previous error message was, this was it:

"Unable to make changes to Parental Controls settings. If this problem persists, see your system administrator."
