Can't install any antivirus software

I am having great difficulty installing my antivirus software. I have tried installing multiple anti-virus products and each of them fail to install for various reasons.
When I tried to install Symantec Endpoint, I recieved the error code 1920 (~ insufficient privileges, failed to started defwatch). I tried numerous remedies from the symantec web page and some things from my office IT department. I finally gave up and tried to install McAfee. The the user account control ask for permission to start but the McAfee installation screens never appear. I tried various remedies from McAfee blogs but none had any affect. I also tried to install AVG free version yesterday but it failed during the later part of the installation...something about a service could not start.
I ran an installation support tool from Symantec and it said that my admin account was a known account with disabled priviledges. That error doesn't make sense because this PC is not a networked machine and I am logged in as the administrator.
I would sincerely appreciate some help.

Update, While reviewing the vista blogs I noticed the new Windows Security Essentials is available. I just installed it with no problems. While I would still like to know why the others won't, I'm glad I'm no longer un-protetected.

Ill tell you why. There is some little corruption or other minor problem with your computer . The one size fits all AV did not install. MSE is made just for Windows and small problems are already taken into account.

Re: Can't install any antivirus software

Rich, How do I fix those "little corruptions". I did a system restore from a set of CDs I burned when I first set up my machine and even that didn't help.

I followed the instructions for the SFC check. It said that there were some corrupt files that could not be fixed. I pasted the findstr command line on the elevated (admin) prompt but it said Findstr was not able to open sfcdetails.txt. I searched for sfcdetails.txt with explorer and did not find it. I also tried to open the CBS.txt file but it also said access denied. I changed the properties of the files (windows warned me not to) and tried to open it...still would not let me open it.

SFC stores the results in the CBS.log which you find in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. This is a massive file of approximately 5MB and if you care to see it all, you must send CBS.log to one of your own folders from where you can double click on it. It will then open with Notepad. Note: You cannot open it inside the CBS folder. You will get an Access denied message.

But most likely you are only interested in the part that shows the corrupted files that were fixed – or not fixed. For that you need a significant data reduction. You do that as follows:

Open another elevated Command Prompt and paste this command into it:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

This will show all the files you want to see in the Command Prompt window.

Since that window is not very practical for a detailed study, you want to paste the content into a Notepad, Wordpad or Word file.

For that you right click on the Command Prompt window (any place is good) and click Select all. Then you click on the selected text in the window. Now this whole text is stored on the clipboard and you can paste it into a document file where you can analyze it.
Be sure to tell me if it works.

That worked. The only file that is said it could not repair is the following:
Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"settings.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar, Version = 6.0.6. It re
I checked to see if McAfee install would launch after running the SFC and it still won't work. So something is still wrong. However, the only problem I seem to have is with the Anti-virus installations. Since the Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be adequate, I'm not sure it is worth trouble shooting any further. I was a little worried that I had some sophisticated virus that was blocking the install but MSE and Symantec on-line check both say I'm clean. Unless the problem manifest itself elsewhere, can I assume that I don't have any serious system corruptions?
Thanks for your assistance

First Sidebar are the gadgets, forget about that
Second Only MSE anti virus is made just for windows. The others one size fits all. I think that I could get it to install, but even if I am wrong it is not a need for concern
If you run the MSE anti virus and Malwarebytes and you are clean, its a good bet that you are.
I am very cautious with my computer, it is a big investment, today. If I were in your shoes, I would be satisifed. I say go out and enjoy.

You are very welcome to come back with any new questions or to share your experience or knowledge with others. Take care and enjoy.
