See what happes if you run in startup mode? f8 on bootup.

You should try some malware scans while in safe mode too.

You might want to read this ... msftstp.exe

Warning! Backdoor Trojans

These are the most dangerous, and most widespread, type of Trojan.
Backdoor Trojans provide the author or ‘master’ of the Trojan with remote ‘administration’ of victim machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer and more.
If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one, if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.
Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

If you choose to format and reinstall see this link for instructions:
Windows: reformat and reinstall - Cyberwalker.com

Though the Trojans have been identified there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy again.

If you decide to reformat, you should still download the protection on the newly formatted PC, or else you will have a high chance of reinfection.

Re: When I Startup Vista All of my programs say "(Program Name) has stopped working"

10 people will give you 10 different answers. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as the primary AV/AM/AS software for use in real time and for periodic scheduled updates and scans: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/. Then I suggest every 2 weeks or so you update and scan with Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. Together, they will do a very good job of keeping your system clean - but the most important part is you.

Avoid websites where malware is likely to exist and infect you (like P2P sites and porn sites and other such places). Be careful about what you download and know where you're getting it, be careful about clicking on links you don't recognize or anything that seems suspicious or too good to be true, be careful with attachments to e-mails and links in e-mails (especially from people you don't know or where the link name and the URL that shows up are different) - in essence, use common sense.

No, neither of the above are perfect and they won't protect you from everything and some malware may get through - but this combination has worked well for me and it is free (as you requested) and both are very good programs and they should do as good a job as any others out there (including those people pay for).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Re: When I Startup Vista All of my programs say "(Program Name) has stopped working"

It will erase everything. If you can't remove your own files, music, pictures documents etc, they will be lost.

Yes, it'll be just like when you got it. Before you do this, you should make sure that you have ALL the disks that came with bit. Specifically the driver disks.

If you can't find them, another computer connected to the internet, you can get the drivers from the aker, and use a usb stick.

Re: When I Startup Vista All of my programs say "(Program Name) has stopped working"

In almost all cases, this will return your system to its factory-original conditions and, in the process, format the drive. If it is different from most and it asks if you want to format the drive, answer yes and if given the option choose a full format over a quick format. If it is a reinstallation disk from the manufacturer, it most likely has the proper drivers already on that disk and may need no others (unless you changed any of the hardware since it was purchased) but some do provide them on a separate disk so check first. Still, it would be safer to have the drivers downloaded and available just in case (as once you start, you won't really be able to stop or undo what has been done).

You can use Knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html with a good ISO copier like: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm along with a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer). This should give you enough access to the system (if you can't get in any other way) to backup your important data. If you can access normally or through safe mode, then you can backup that way. Take ONLY your data (like documents and pictures) and nothing else as you do not want to backup the virus and move it unintentionally and end up in the same boat again.

Once done, you can do a clean install (or call it a restore to factory original conditions) using the Recovery Disk. To do a clean install proceed as follows: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_install_03.asp (adapted as necessary by the procedures of your computer manufacturer). Then you will need to re-install all your programs, reset all your preferences, reconfigure your network and email settings, restore your backed up data, run Windows Update with possibly nearly 150 updates pending,...

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
