What is your opinion on anti virus software? Which do you believe is the best? I'd like to know, since I was planning on installing Avast or AVG.

Best is only subjective
The majority, I belive, will suggest
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarbytes (free)
and the Windows Firewall

Subjectively the best:
Free
Catches most virus and malware
Made just for windows
I have never seen a problem caused by any of these software products

I use it without problems
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

As an added note, almost all other software at one time or another has caused a BSOD, which I had to fix.

I don't care about value, price or anything else like that. I mean based completely on features, what is the most effective program.

Again subective,

I think that I just named it.
Malwarebytes ,the free version, is considered the BEST by most. Scan once a week.
Most would agree with Security Essentials.

Well, the thing is, I have all of that and more, but malware seems to slip by often. :|

Malware my slip buy with the free Malwarebytes and it only scans after you have been infected.
The pay version gives real time protection.

You're right on that. I had it for a while actually (full version), very nice protection.

What ever you choose what is not shown on the chart is common sense. We all have a basic understanding of what should not be done
In addition
Download winpatrol, it will give you a warning whenever something is downloaded. It will give you the option to go back to before the download

Maybe you should investigate HOW the malware is slipping by. Where is the weakest link in the chain? Is it files intentionally downloaded by you, for example, which were covered in malware and not picked up?

No, it is definitely not from files I have downloaded. More likely odd sites I my visit, or other persons using my computer (My brother does). If I run a routine scan I will often find a few tracking cookies and adware bugs.

Adware and Tracking Cookies are less of a problem. I guess you should just check and disinfect every so often then!

I'm not a big fan on AVG, the detection rates could be higher and it eats CPU so to speak.

I use WOT (Web Of Trust) for link scanning: Safe Browsing Tool | WOT (Web of Trust)

I've tried using McAfee site advisor but I haven't had very good experiences with it as I found it only occasionally worked

I have used Bit Defeneder, Karspersky and Norton all of these. Now I am using Norton 360 and quite satisfied with its performance and feature.

Apart Karspersky is also good, very light and doesn't give too much load on CPU.

Thanks.
Arvin

If AVG Is Installed and updated, configured properly, as well as using the "AVG SP1" update. CPU usage is very low along with the ajustment to scan Priority.
