Clean then Defrag OR Defrag then Clean

I was wondering what should be done first.

I use CCleaner and recently downloaded Defraggler (but have not used it because of this question).

Should I run CCleaner and THEN run Defraggler?

OR

Run Defraggler and THEN run CCleaner?

I've thought about just using CCleaner only and no defragging.

My Computer

Clean first and if you are going to use Defraggler you will need to go to Task Schedular and click on defrag.properties and uncheck the enable box as you don't want 2 defraggers running. It is turned on by default

You want to limit the defrags, so you will not wear out the hard drive. Here are some additional pointers.
To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
http://www.piriform.com/

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

Optimize Windows 7

I set CCleaner to empty the recycle bin. I clean just before defrag, and also right before doing MalwareBytes scans. It's a pain if MalwareBytes finds something it doesn't like in the recycle bin. You can close MalwareBytes, empty the recycle bin, then run the scan again but it's just a nuisance if you know for sure what the stuff in the recycle bin is(for example if you do scripting programming those are often false flagged as a malware.)

This way I only have to remember to run CCleaner immediately before these other tasks.

So I ran the Defraggler program. When it first analyzed my hard drive it said 12% fragmentation. I click to defrag. Once it was done. Just for curiousity, I had it re-analyze my hard drive and then it said it there was 28% fragmentation. I did not continue with another defrag.

But why would fragmentation go up?

I probably should be asking the programs website and not this forum.

This could happen when going from one defrag software to another. They analzye differently. If that is the situation, I would defrag once more, it should go to zero. Then only when needed.

I seem to remember something like this happening to me as well, is it system volume information that's not defragging?

I'm using Auslogics now and I don't get that anymore.

Even if my analysis is wrong, and I dont think that it is, you need a defrag, 28% is too high. After you are done stay with Defraggler is that is what you used.

Sure, after you click analyze and it tells you how much is fragmented, click the view files button, and it will list them for you.

If it makes any difference I use auslogics, too and am very satisfied. It seems to defrag a lot faster than the others.

Puran is pretty comparable to Auslogics. Also when you do analyze or actually defrag it produces an html table with the fragmented files, folders, MFTs etc.

Sometimes if I have a fresh image backup I'll turn off System Restore to delete all the shadow copies, do the defrag with all optimizations on in Puran, then turn System Restore back on and make a restore point. That method dumps all the backup copies of files and other bloat you can be collecting. I image often so it's not that risky a procedure. Also cleaning off all the crud first tends to make for smaller restore points.

That's an excellent idea. I just remove them with the tools in properties but it always leaves the last one. Does turning it off remove that last one as well?

Ahhh I see, I viewed the files after a 2nd attempt to defrag (as suggested by rich) and the top 2 fragmented files show system volume information.

Fragmentation is still at 28%.

Should I be concerned and download Auslogics and run a 3rd attempt to defrag my hard drive.

I have provided pictures.

System Volume Information, basically are system restore points. If defragged SR will be lost. They are, therefore, now protected from defrag by most software.
You are ok. Just enjoy, now.
