Solved McAfee security

I have a DELL desk top that came with McAfee installed and I have had no problems until a couple of days ago.

My subscription finishes 23/11/11 but they sent an email saying “Your subscription has been successfully renewed using the payment information on file“ now I have not given any authority of any kind for automatic renewal, I have emailed them but no answered to date. Has anyone experienced this type of thing at all??

My Computer

Did it actually come from mcafee? Have you seen the payment come through your bank or credit card company? Did you give them your credit card information? If so sometimes companies assume an automatic payment unless you explicitly say no which, if you checked, would have been in the terms. I don't know why they would charge you a month early. If I where you I'd ditch Mcafee without waiting for your trial to expire. There are much better programs for free.

I definitely did not agree to auto renewal and yes I have paid McAfee by CC each year, I did get 2 emails asking if my payment details were correct which I ignored, I was suspicious. I have used Norton but found they slowed the PC down too much and apart from this latest episode had no complaints with McAfee. but if it is genuine I will ditch them

Give them a call. They'll understand what the problem is and hopefully will refund your money. They refunded my Dad when his subscription renewed itself without him wanting it to :)

Again, as would probably be put in the terms, they will assume automatic payment unless you had told them in writing that you didn't want auto-pay. If that is in the terms and you agreed to them then it is perfectly legal. Really if you agreed to their terms then you legally did agree to them charging you automatically regardless as to whether or not you actually read them.

I've never had Mcafee so I can't comment further as to their practices.

They're hardly going to value a legal contract more than a loyal customer so I'm sure they'd be more than willing to sort this out :)

@townsbg You are right it is in the agreement:

If you have provided McAfee with a valid credit card number or an alternate payment method, your subscription will be automatically renewed (and charged to the account you have provided) for another term at the expiration of your current term, whenever your local regulations allow, for a fee no greater than McAfee´s then-current price, excluding promotional and discount pricing. The new term will be for the same duration as the expired term unless otherwise specified at time of renewal. This renewal will be processed (and your card charged) within 30 days prior to the expiration of the term and each anniversary thereafter. If you do not desire to have your subscription automatically renewed, you must, prior to the expiration of your subscription term, inform McAfee of your intention not to renew your subscription to the Software. McAfee will send written notice of your renewal to the e-mail address you have provided to McAfee prior to the time of your renewal and upon the renewal of your subscription term. If your subscription is automatically renewed and you request a refund of the subscription price within sixty days of the renewal (or any such longer period that McAfee may, in its sole discretion, allow), McAfee will refund the full subscription price to you. You must provide current, complete, and accurate information for your billing account. You are responsible for ensuring this information is correct and must promptly update all information to keep your billing account current, complete, and accurate (such as a change in billing address, credit card number, or credit card expiration date). You must promptly notify McAfee if your credit card is canceled

Interesting to see they can’t spell cancelled correctly Thanks guys

I have found McAfee to be very customer oriented and helpful. I can't remember how, but . . . I believe you get a notification with "automatic renewal" selected. Just untick it. Norton does (or at least used to do this as well).

Please let us know if McAfee resolved the issue. Would be interested to know.

Thanks

No they have not done a thing, I did email them, but auto renewal is by default (see my last post) which IMO is not user friendly I will not renew next time round :sa:

Have you called them? Do so and if they give you any difficulties ask for a supervisor.

This is a complaint that I have seen before. Call the credit card company and get the change reversed. Then download and use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. Its free and at least as good.

@townsbg No I have not phoned them I suspect that I would get passed from one joker to another anyway they are an Internet Co so email should be the way to go apart from the time and cost of phoning
@rich46 That is interesting is it really as good ? too much time has gone to stop payment so I will use what I have payed for but that will be it.

My Computer

To the OP, yes you did agree to automatic renewal of the subscription when you first activated the software. It's right there in the Terms of Service that you no doubt skipped over, like most people do.

To prevent it happening next year go in to your online account and make sure that auto-renewal is unchecked.

McAfee will give immediate refunds - just call their Customer Service department, usually a toll-free call.

For New Zealand the details are in this web page: Services and Support for Home and Office

You can phone them toll-free or use online chat.

I'd give you the phone number but at the time I tried to get that page it appeared the servers were down. Sorry about that.

McAfee Forums are here: https://community.mcafee.com/index.jspa where I am a Moderator.

I do NOT recommend calling your credit card company and refusing the charge...that would cause unnecessary problems, as, as I stated, you did agree to this.

McAfee are glad to give refunds when asked.

To speak with a Customer Service representative, call 0800 880 094. You may be asked for your registered email address and order number (if you don't have that, don't worry). Telephone charges may apply (this only applies where charges are made for any calls, such as from a hotel switchboard).
Estimated wait time: 5 minutes
Hours of Operation: Available 24x7
No you wont get "passed from one joker to another" and no, they aren't an internet company as you stated. Email communication is the slowest possible way of communicating with anyone out of the choices available, you should realise that, so if you want a speedy solution, pick up the phone and call that toll-free number.

The only thing that might cause issues is if you've gone more than 30 days since the renewal occurred but there is no harm in trying at least.

Thanks very interesting but as I found out in the following quote from the agreement (which I failed to read) it was the default option.

@townsbg You are right it is in the agreement:

So I will see the next 12mths out and then see how I feel, I should add I have no problems with the effectiveness of the product it is just the default being accept and of course me for not noticing it.

My Computer

As I stated you can go to your on line account and turn auto-renewal off if you wish so it wont happen next year.

Canceled is the American English spelling and is correct....for the USA, where they are headquartered.

If you really don't want to pay for it you can get your money back. If it where me I'd call them and if they gave me a hard time I'd ask for a supervisor taking it as far as I need too. They care more about their reputation than 1 customer's money because they know that with social media some people can and well slam them for it. Now, that said, what do you have against calling them? Don't let it be because you don't think that you'll get anywhere because you have a better chance at getting your money back if you try. Other than time what do you have to lose? Per their policy and possibly law within a certain amount of time they have to give the money back. There are better programs that are free so I don't understand why you'd wait it out.
