Does scanning an HTML file determine whether a site is safe or not?

    Does scanning an HTML file determine whether a site is safe or not?

    Let's say I wanted to go to a site but I'm not sure whether I'll get viruses/trojans from visiting it. I right-click on it's link, Save Target As, and save it to my desktop. I then scan the file with MSE, and so far I haven't seen anything malicious from scanning HTML files.

    But does it determine whether it's safe or not? Can MSE even scan links?

    The shortcut file link will be scanned but not the destination i.e The website. You need something like else to get advice on the website: -

    To find out if a site is safe or not, I recommend installing Web of Trust from Safe Browsing Tool | WOT (Web of Trust). This gives community ratings on the site quality.

    I like using VirusTotal and urlvoid and ipvoid to get a good idea of what is on the site .

    They come in handy for in case you get a red wot rating and to make sure what the site has before clicking them, those will give more information, I like the VirusTotal and the urlvoid ones most. They scan and give you a results page of what was found.

    I find WOT to be very helpful but there are false positives and really a site is only flagged if other users have reported it. Basically there is no substitute for safe browsing.
